The regular meeting of the Airport Advisory Board was held February 21, 2001, at Auburn City
Hall in Room 1.
TIME: 7:30 AM
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Rodger Campbell, Don Rottle, Joe DeJoie, Bud Buchanan
STAFF PRESENT:
TENANTS PRESENT:
John Anderson, Airport Manager; Carolyn Brown, Secretary
Ray Richcreek, John Gallo
The meeting was called to order by Rodger Campbell, chairman
John Anderson discussed what has been happening with the Master Plan. The Technical
Committee members will receive a packet of information for the next meeting. Per the FAA
comments, they will not participate with high-speed taxiways. Also, will not support parallel
taxiways being made into one. They may support widening a taxi way by 5 feet and relocating
the lights.
There could be a conflict in the take off direction. Overruns are a potential for non-participation
by the FAA. They don't feel the Airport will have enough large itinerant aircraft. FAA has to
sign off on the ALP in order for the Airport to receive funding. John will have more information
at the next technical meeting. There will be handouts for people who aren't able to attend the
March 21st Master Plan meeting.
Discussed traffic pattern departing. Don Rottle would like a hand out to give to pilots regarding
recommended patterns. John stated that he has one available at the airport.
Joe DeJoie would like to see a letter go out to all tenants changing the Airport Traffic Pattern
Altitude. John agreed that the letter could reference changing the traffic pattern to 1000 feet
and ask for comments. Don Rottle would also like to add that the straight in approach is not
recommended. Planes Won't come in straight over the City. Would also like to see the circle
pattern to the east.
John Anderson said that the Super Unicom is up and running. Has been receiving good
comments and people are getting used to it. Joe DeJoie gave a little overview of the uses.
Everyone agreed that the frequency is a problem, because it is the one at Thun field. Joe
DeJoie would like to recommend that someone monitor the Unicom in case of emergencies. An
example given was landing gear that won't come down. Don Rottle would like a notice to go
out suggesting that pilots put a plane down in the grass instead of trying to land on the runway.
John Anderson stated that the Airport has a radio in the truck that is on at all times. He will look
into acquiring hand held radio in addition to the radio in the truck.

John Anderson said the Security to come on line March 1. This may reduce insurance on the
planes.
Discussed requirements for having "on field" crash fire & rescue equipment. The North Auburn
fire station is about 1/3 mile away. And on field crash fire and rescue is not required by FAR's.
Board discussion on fly-out and airspace. Also, discussed direct entry. The Board would like to
have a pilot's information / safety meeting.
Discussed new electronic technology for landing at airports, i.e. ALS, GPS, and mapping.
John Anderson stated that the Airport Master Plan meeting group appreciates Auburn Flight
Service for allowing the use of their facility for the meetings. John and the Board members
would like to thank Jamelle Garcia for his participation.
John Anderson and Paul Krauss have been working with Bill Vandenburg, who wants to
develop and build on the three acres to the north. At this time the City Council doesn't want to
tie up anymore bonding capacity at the airport for new hangers. John said they are working
with someone to build hangers and City will have the land lease which will be approximately 40
years. They are still working on the strip to lease to people who want to build their own
hangers. That property will lease at 0.40 cents a square foot. The City Council also does not
wish to pay for bringing in utilities into the new hangers. Power will be brought in from 30"'
Street.
Joe DeJoie stated that the power in the new hangers does not seem adequate. John said that
the Fire Department would be around to inspect hangers for violations. He has noticed that
some people have a lot stored in the hangers. Joe had talked about plugging in engine
heaters, and the fire department has recommended not over night. Discussed some of the
types of heaters and whether or not someone is around to monitor. John suggested that if
anyone has any questions, bring them in and he will talk to the Fire Marshall.
Discussed a new runway overlay system. Ray Richcreek brought in some information on the
'White system' which is a special mix of concrete and is a white color. The overlay has a 20-
year life. John Anderson discussed the seal coats used. Joe DeJoie said the seal coats are
coming off the runway. John said this new coating would not be seal coating but overlay. The
overlay is programmed for a grant next quarter, but the City needs to come up with 10%. The
overlay will be on the runway, the taxiways and will go up to the hangers.
Meeting adjourned at 9:00 am.
