HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-13-2006 WASHINGTON City of Auburn Arts Commission Monday, March 13,2006,4:30 pm Meeting Minutes Commissioners present: Chair Kristen Brock, Herman Ansingh, Nancy Colson, Bonnie Egbert, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flanery, Pat Gallagher, Barbie Sharrard, Pam Smith Commissioners absent (excused): Anne Baunach, Don Gardner, Steve LePenske Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Coordinator Call to order: Commission Chair Kristen Brock called the meeting to order at 4:35 p.m. I. Approval of February Minutes; Introductions February minutes: Commission Chair Kristen Brock called for approval of the January minutes. Commissioner Herman Ansingh moved the January minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Barbie Sharrard seconded the motion. MOTION APPROVED. II. Staff Report Cultural Arts Manager Search Cultural Arts Coordinator Laurie Rose reported interviews for the Cultural Arts Manager position will take place later this week. Approximately four candidates will be interviewed by Parks, Arts & Recreation Director Daryl Faber and Human Resources staff. February Month-end Report Ms. Rose circulated the Cultural Arts month-end staff report for commissioner's review. III. Artisans in the Schools Seattle Opera Residency at Pioneer Ms. Rose reviewed the highlights of the recently completed week-long opera and stagecraft residency with 5th graders at Pioneer Elementary. The program is presented in honor of Gertrud Sprenger and the residency March 13, 2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of4 was featured as the cover story in the March 1 Auburn Reporter. Details of the program are outlined in the February month-end staff report. Comerford Irish Dancers Master Class (added report) Ms. Rose reported two of the dancers from the upcoming BRAVO presentation of An Tua and the Comerford Irish Dancers will conduct Irish folk dance master classes next week for 3'd graders; one at Lea Hill Elementary and the other at Gildo Rey. IV. Public Art Project Updates F Street & Auburn Way S. Ms. Rose reported the project is at the foundry and scheduled for completion the end of the month. She and artist Ingrid Lahti will visit the foundry next week to check on progress. Installation is tentatively scheduled for end of the month or the first of April. W. Main St. & Interurban Trail Ms. Rose circulated the original applications of the three finalists for the commissioners' review. The public art panel will conduct interviews with the finalists and review their proposals March 16, 1 to 5 p.m. in Council Chambers. The panel will make its final recommendation to the Arts Commission at its April meeting. Commissioners Ansingh and Linda Elliott asked if they may also participate on the panel. Ms. Brock invited commissioners to attend if they wished. Public Art Inventory/Maintenance project 4Culture's Public Art Manager Greg Bell and his staff will inventory the City's public art works this spring and plan to have final inventory report and maintenance recommendations ready by June 1st. Discussion followed regarding creating a formal Public Art Policy for the City in conjunction with the inventory/maintenance project. Staff will research other municipal public art policies and report to commission at a future date. 2007 Public Art Project Ms. Brock reviewed Parks Director Daryl Faber's request the arts commission consider the new Auburn Golf Course clubhouse as the site for its 2007 Public Art Project for either an installation outside as part of the entrance, or inside the lobby. Ms. Brock called for a vote to select the new clubhouse as the site for 2007 Public Art Project. Ms. Elliott moved to select the clubhouse for the arts commission 2007 Public Art Project. Ms. Sharrard seconded the motion. MOTION APPROVED. Feb. 13, 2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 4 Ms. Brock opened the table to questions. Discussion followed regarding the details as they are known and scope of the clubhouse project. The commission amended the above stated motion, adding to the statement that funding options, in conjunction with the annual budget of $30,000 for new Public Art projects, be explored by staff to appropriately match the scale and scope of the proposed clubhouse design. V. BRAVO updates February/March updates Ms. Rose reported total BRAVO ticket sales to date are approximately 97% of the revenue goal for the season and attendance is 82% of estimate. The Auburn Symphony Orchestra's February concert sold very well, especially at the door, and attendance numbers came in just under goal. Fourth grade students attended a rehearsal and approximately one quarter of all audiences attended Mr. Kershaw's pre-concert lectures. The March BRAVO Kids' presentation of Identical Harmony sing-along show was very well attended with significant door sales as well. Marketing initiatives for the two final BRAVO productions in April are underway. 2006/07 BRAVO The former Cultural Arts Manager Lori Patrick was able to finalize both the BRAVO and BRAVO Kids' 06/07 season before her final day with the City. Ms. Rose reported she will begin promotion for the new season at the last mainstage BRAVO show this year and continue with other smaller promotions in the summer before the brochure is distributed in August. VI. Other Business Ms. Rose reported on her recent experience as a grant review panelist for 4Culture's Sustained Support program. Over 140 applications were submitted and she was impressed Auburn-based organizations came in second in number of applications submitted. Ms. Rose circulated an invitation from the Interurban Center for the Arts at Green River Community College to participate in a focus group regarding its Art Docents school program the evening of March 20 and a follow-up symposium the evening of April 20. Feb. 13, 2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 3 of 4 Ms. Rose reported she's been asked to sit on 4Culture's 2006 King County Performance Network Site Specific Performing Arts selection committee to determine those artists and/or performing arts groups for this year's slate of touring performers. The annual Cultural Congress sponsored by Washington Arts Alliance is April 24 - 26 in Leavenworth. Ms. Rose will attend half of the conference this year, but encourages all commissioners to review the conference workshops and seminars and plan to attend all or part of the conference. It is an excellent opportunity to network with other arts administrators, board and commission members from around the state.
