Meeting Minutes
Present: Kristen Brock, Cary Davidson, Debby Deal, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flanery, Pat
Gallagher, Patricia Judd, Leslie Moore, Tanya Rottle, Laurel Siegmund, Donna Smart, Cultural
Arts Mgr Laurie Rose; Visual/Public Art Coordinator Maija McKnight
Absent: Nancy Colson, Councilmember Rich Wagner (excused)
Call to order: President Linda Elliott called the meeting to order at 4:33 p.m.
Approval of Minutes and Introductions
Commissioner Linda Elliott called for approval of the July minutes. Commissioner
Laurel Siegmund noted omission under New Business regarding developing criteria for
private business who wish to display art works. Commissioner Pat Judd moved the
June minutes be approved as submitted with noted omission. Commissioner Pat
Gallagher seconded the motion. Motion approved.
Ms. Elliott welcomed new commissioners Debby Deal, Cary Davidson, Donna Smart,
new Visual/Public Art Coordinator Maija McKnight and guests Mayor Pete Lewis and
Terry Pottmeyer. Mayor Lewis welcomed the three new commissioners and thank all
commissioners for their volunteerism. The Mayor reviewed various downtown
redevelopment plans and asked the commission to take a partnership role with City
Council in defining how art can intersect with development projects throughout the City.
II. A-1 Collision/Urban ArtWorks Mural Project
Urban ArtWorks Executive Director Terry Pottmeyer presented a PowerPoint review of
the development, design and completion of a mural along the Burlington Northern
Railroad, on the back of A-1 Collision. Two other mural projects, all created by at-risk
young people with the intent of providing professional opportunities in the arts for them,
will be displayed on the south side of the form Mel's Lumber building and in City Hall.
Ms Pottmeyer invited the commission to attend the dedication on August 20 and
thanked Mayor Lewis, Auburn Youth Council, Auburn Youth Resources, A-1 Collision
and other community sponsors that made the project possible.
III. Committee Reports
Chair Report
Ms. Elliott called for the regular September meeting to be a working session to plan
annual report to the Council's Planning and Community Development Committee
(PCDC - the Parks, Arts & Recreation Council oversight committee). The Commission
has been placed on PCDC Sept. 22 agenda. Cultural Arts Manager requests that all
commissioners attend the planning session and the Sept. 22nd PCDC meeting.

Membership Committee Report
Ms. Elliott thanked the commission for their work recruiting new members and
reminded them new vacancies will be open in January. Commission asked Ms. Rose to
update the terms of the commission.
Public Art Committee Report
Mr. Gallagher reported the Public Art Committee completed its mission/vision
statement draft, as well as a base policy, "what is public art in Auburn to be reviewed
by the full commission later this fall. Ms. Rose gave update reports on current projects.
"Tobu Bo" on W. Main is complete. The golf course clubhouse project is currently in
fabrication design phase. Artist Susan Zoccola is working with a metal fabricator in
Seattle and hopes to have a model ready for review for staff later this month.
Visual Art Committee Report
Ms. Rose reported on behalf of Commissioner Laurel Siegmund, who needed to be
excused to start the jury process for the Auburn Good OI Days (AGOD) exhibit in the
lobby. Ms. Rose said approximately 95 artworks were submitted to AGOD juried art
show, along with over 100 works submitted for the adjunct Youth exhibit. The visual
arts committee served AGOD as its "chair" in coordinating the large annual event.
IV. Staff Report
Ms. Rose opened up the floor for discussion and review of the Project Support Grant
applications for the first round of 2008. After discussion of each application, the
commission decided all four applicants will be awarded approximately three-quarters of
their full requests in order to have enough funds remaining for the second round later
this year. The commission subsequently discussed the program, its mission and
purpose.
IV. Other/New Business
Ms. Rose requested the regular September meeting be moved to Monday, September 8
at the regular time. The commission agreed.
There being no other business, Ms. Elliott adjourned the meeting at 6:50pm.
