Visual Arts Committee
Commissioner Laurel Siegmund noted that there was an upcoming artists' opening at a
Pilates studio on Friday. This opening is notable because the business owner
approached the art commission looking for guidance on how to display an art exhibition.
It is a goal of the Visual Arts Committee that we continue to build that link between
independent businesses and individual artists, potentially by creating a'how-to' guide
and being available for guidance and advise to support mutually beneficial partnerships
that provide access to the arts.
Commissioner Laurel Siegmund reported that the 25th Anniversary event will be
scheduled on either July 18 or 25, 2009 in Les Gove Park. The name of the event will
be "Art-tagious: Catch the 25th Anniversary Auburn Arts Commission Celebration" and
seek to offer opportunities for attendees to learn and experience a wide variety of art
mediums, techniques and terminology through both looking and doing. Art booths will
be staffed and artists and community members both hired and recruited. Cultural Arts
Manager Laurie Rose noted that a future committee action should be to create a
proposed budget for the activities. Discussion followed.
Ms. McKnight reported that there was an overwhelmingly positive response from artists
for the Small Works, Big Presents exhibition. Ms. McKnight also acknowledged the
Commissioners who volunteered to assist both the check in and the jurying process
(Tanya Rottle and Donna Smart). Ms. McKnight encouraged Commissioners to visit the
White River Valley Museum prior to December 14, 2008 to view the exhibition and
added that there are a great many affordable artworks still available. The judges Sheifa
Farr, Jim McDonald, and Paul Metivier selected 78 artworks submitted from the 369
entries of 141 participating artists. Artist registration was open to all artists, and saw 32
Auburn based artists, 35 from the Greater King County, 18 from Seattle, and 40 from
Pierce County and 16 from other Washington State Counties. Farr, McDonald and
Metivier reviewed original works submitted for consideration and selected 49 artists for
the exhibition. Ms. McKnight reported that a survey was created online asking
participating artists for feedback to better understand the main motivations for
participating and refine for 2009 exhibition.
Public Art Committee
Visual/Public Art Coordinator Maija McKnight reported that the Golf Course Clubhouse
Public Artwork by Susan Zoccola is scheduled to be installed by mid-December. Since last
reporting, additional changes include the placement of the golf swing- inspired artwork
from the lawn adjacent to the building to the triangular bark-covered burm located between
the clubhouse north lawn, the parking lot and the golf cart entry road. This new location
was preferable to the golf course staff, the artist and the cultural arts staff after multiple
site visits. The ball trajectory-inspired artwork will still be located on the south clubhouse
lawn. The artist has selected the finishing colors of the artwork, the concrete pad has
been poured and is curing, and lighting is being selected. Commissioner Tanya Rottle
inquired as to the date of the dedication. Ms. McKnight reported that currently there is
work being done to repair the lighting in the golf course waterFall, and it is intended that a
joint dedication for the waterFall and the public artwork will be planned for an evening in
May 2009.
Ms. McKnight reported that the Community Center Public Art Project by Virginia
Paquette continues in its planning phase. Ms. Rose, Ms. McKnight, Councilman Rich
Wagner, Ms. Paquette and BLRB Architects staff will be meeting to discuss the
engineering, weight and logistics of the proposed project to move forward into final
design. Ms. Paquette has been working with the same concept but altering the design to
accommodate the weight load in a feasible and attractive solution. The artist is on
schedule to work with the architecture firm's timeline for permitting and building.
Discussion followed.
Ms. Rose reported that she and Ms. McKnight will be attending the Downtown
Redevelopment Committee meeting on December 9. Arts Commissioners interested
were also welcome to attend this public meeting.

will meet next week to discuss promotional media/print projects for 2009. Ms. Rose
shared that it is her hope to have the 25th Anniversary materials have a cohesive look
that also fits within the City of Auburn branding standards. Ms. Rose also reported that
the `community calendar' is scheduled to be out next week. Ms. Rose asked the
commission to consider using the Local Arts Agency 4-Culture monies to fund the 25tn
Anniversary events. Staff was asked to add the topic to a future agenda.
