Meeting Minutes

Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions
President Nancy Colson called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm
Approval of Minutes
Ms. Colson called for approval of the December minutes. Commissioner Laurel Siegmund moved the
minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Linda Elliott seconded the motion. Motion approved.
Opening Remarks
2009 Arts Commission President Nancy Colson and Vice-President Leslie Moore noted their excitement
for the year ahead and appreciation to the other commission members for their commitment to the
commission.
Staff Report
Golf Course Public Art Project Update: Visual/Public Art Coordinator Maija McKnight reported that
the first of finro artworks by Susan Zoccola was installed on December 30at the Golf Course Club
House. The artist will paint the vertical supporting post and stain the concrete pad. Photographs
of the installation were shared with the commission. The second artwork is currently being
fabricated and is scheduled to be installed towards the end of January or early February. It was
noted that the installation of this work was delayed due to the inclement weather conditions. A
dedication will be scheduled for spring 2009 to correspond with other events planned at the golf
course at that time.
25th Anniversary Events Update: Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose distributed a handout with
the listing of events planned to commemorate the Arts Commission's 25th Anniversary. These
events include: 1) March, 2009 Proclamation by Mayor; Installation of Emeritus Members, 2)
Spring 2009 Public Art Dedication (Golf Course), 3) July 25, 2009, Art-tagious: Catch the 25th
Anniversary Auburn Arts Commission Art Festival, a free community arts festival that offers
opportunities for attendees to learn and experience a wide variety of art mediums, techniques and
terminology through both looking and doing, 4) September 24, 2009 Public Art Event and
Afterhours reception with presentations from public artists that are a part of the City of Auburn
collection. The promotional materials that are being created to support these events include: a
promotional video, the 2009 Community Calendar, a 25th Anniversary logo, and a 25th
Anniversary poster. Funds for these events will be primarily drawn from the commission's annual
4Culture Local Arts Agency grant.

Community Center Public Art Project Presentation
Ms. Rose introduced Seattle artist Virginia Paquette. Ms. Paquette provided an overview of her proposal
for creating two individual works that represent the White and Green Rivers that will be separate, but
related to each other within the designed lobby space for the Community Center. She expfained that she
was inspired by the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification of the building
and hoped that her artwork will also represent these environmental practices. Ms. Paquette is working
along side the Community Center's architecture firm BLRB and various structural and glass engineers to
finalize construction and engineering of the work. The two proposed artworks were described in greater
detail with material samples. A model of the building was also presented that portrayed the placement of
the artwork in three dimensions. Discussion followed.
Other/New Business
• Commissioner Pat Judd reminded commissioners of the upcoming Uniquely Auburn event,
January 25, at the Auburn PAC.
• Ms. Rose reminded commissioners of upcoming BRAVO and Comedy at The Ave performances
that same weekend.

o Visual Arts Committee - Wednesday, January 14 at 4 pm at Parks, Arts and Recreation
o Public Art Committee - Thursday, January 15 at 5 pm at Parks, Arts and Recreation
o Arts Commission Meeting - Tuesday, February 3 at 4:30 at Auburn City Hall, Rm 3
o Art Education Committee - Tuesday, February 10 at 10 am at Parks, Arts and Recreation
o The Staff Art Show and Display that will be on view in the City Hall Lobby has been
extended to include volunteers and family of staff
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:47 p.m.
