CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING
MEETING MINUTES OF September 14, 2003
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held September 14,
2003, in Conference Room #2. The members in attendance were as follows:
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Cyril Van Selus, Member; Yvonne
Yaskus, Secretary/Chief Examiner
STAFF PRESENT: Police Chief Jim Kelly; Assistant Fire Chief Russ Vandver
Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.
ACTION:
Approval of Minutes of August 12, 2003 Civil Service meeting
The minutes were accepted as recorded.
COMMISSION
No new business.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
A discussion of changes to job descriptions in the Fire Department was initiated by Assistant
Fire Chief Vandver. Most job description in the fire department, with the exception of
Battalion Chief, have not been updated in many years, and each will be reviewed in the
coming months to ensure duties and responsibilities are kept current.
ACTION:
None taken.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
The most recent Lateral Police Officer exam was discussed. Oral interviews were held on
October 10, 2003, with two applicants testing. Candidates will be notified this week of the
results. There is one anticipated opening in the next month. Recruitment for lateral entry
police officers has become increasingly difficult, as many agencies are constantly testing for

lateral police officers, with some offering incentives for experienced officers. Further
discussion is necessary to see what Auburn can do to attract lateral police officers.
The Police Chief showed the Commission the building plans for the new Police/Court offices.
The agreement to lease the building from the developer of the property has not yet been
finalized, but preliminary plans are in place to relocate the Police Department and Auburn
Municipal Court to the Massey's building on Main Street in 2004.

None taken.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
