Tuesday, September 1, 2009 Meeting Minutes

I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions, Approval of Minutes: Chair Nancy Colson
called the meeting to order at 4:37 pm. Ms. Colson called for approval of the August minutes.
Commissioner Patricia Judd moved the minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Pat
Gallagher seconded the motion. Motion approved.
(Scheduled guest SOCO Culture Manager Barbara McMichaei was not able to attend and will
therefore be rescheduled for an upcoming meeting).
II. Committee Reports
A. Public Art
i. Culturai Arts Manager Laurie Rose reported on the status of the Art in Public Places Policy.
On August 24, the policy was reviewed at the Planning & Community Development (PCD)
Committee Meeting. Ms. Rose provided a summary of the policies that the document
addressed, as well as an overview to the changes to Resolution for % for Art and suggested
changes to Ordinance 6423. Comments and suggestions were submitted by PCD members
and Mayor Lewis, which wili be incorporated into a revised document. The revised document
will be sent to both the PCD Committee and the Municipal Services Committee for
review/discussion. A final draft will be submitted to PCD Committee for Action and
recommendation to the full Council.
ii. Visual/Public Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight provided an overview of the upcoming
September 24th "Walk the Talk: Public Art in Auburn" event. The event has four separate, but
related programs. At 4pm will be a presentation regarding the commission of public artworks
for public works and planning staff by Cath Brunner of 4Culture Public Art. 5pm will be a
public art walking tour of four artworks within the downtown collection. 6- 7:30pm is an artist
panel discussion moderated by 4Culture's Heather Dwyer with nine artists whose artworks
are part of Auburn's public art collection (Garth Edwards, Meg Pettibone, Michele VanSlyke,
Virginia Paquette, Gerard Tsutakawa, Darel Grothaus, Phillip Levine, Ingrid Lahti, and Susan
Zoccola). 7:30 - 9:30pm is a reception that will be a celebration and recognition of the
Commission's 25'h Anniversary. Commissioners will be asked to volunteer and participate in
all of these programs.
iii. Ms. McKnight noted that the "Faces of Auburn" mural project by Tacoma artist Rachael
Dotson is complete. Ms. Rose noted that the project has received many positive comments
and feedback.
B. Staff Report
i. Arts Education: Ms. McKnight noted that three lesson plans have been created to be included
in the Green River Comm. College Foundation's Art Docent Program in area elementary
schools. The lessons are based upon public artworks "Sun Circle", "B-Street Plaza" and
"Threshold." They include a complete curriculum set that includes imagery, discussion
questions, as well as the applicable Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs).
Ms. McKnight noted that development of lesson plans for additional artworks potentially has
multiple uses for other outreach and education regarding the Public Art Collection.
ii. Performing Arts: Ms. Rose provided an update regarding the upcoming season of Performing
Arts programming. BRAVO season will get underway in January 2010 with 4 shows. Ms.
Rose stated she will have tentative confirmation of which shows are available for the October
meeting. "The PresidenYs Own" US Marine Band will perform a free-admission concert on
Monday, Oct. 5 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available only through Parks Dept. The Auburn Ave
Theater gets underway later this month with Comedy Nights, concerts and Ave Kids. The
details for a multi-cultural program are in progress with the City's Cultural Outreach staff at
City Hall. The first presentation is tentatively slated for February or March of 2010 and will run
through the rest of that year.
iii. Galleries: Ms. McKnight distributed a"Call to Artists" postcard that outlines three upcoming
artist opportunities. "Photographing Auburn" exhibition at Auburn Avenue Theater, the 2010
Gallery Season application, and the "Small Works, Big Presents: The Gift of Art" Juried art
show presented in partnership with the White River Valley Museum. Commissioner Tanya
Rottle noted that there were several businesses in downtown Auburn that have expressed
interest in displaying artwork. Ms. Rose noted that Commissioner Laurel Siegmund has noted
interest in developing something that could address this need and that it can be addressed by
the Visual Arts Committee for recommendation to the commission.
c. New/Other Business
Ms. Rose noted that this is the time of year to begin recruiting for new members to fill final-term
vacancies and nominate/elect a Vice-Chair for 2010. Leslie Moore, current Vice Chair, will
become the Chairperson for 2010. Nominations for Vice-Chair will be formerly announced as
open at the October meeting. The nominees will be announced at the November meeting and the
vote will occur at the December meeting, where ballots will be also tallied and Vice Chair for 2010
announced.
