I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes,lntroductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Leslie Moore
called the meeting to order at 4:33 pm: Ms: Moore called for approval of the June. mihutes.
Commissioner Nancy Colson moved the June minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Pat
Judd seconded the motion: Motion approved.
II. Percent for ArtResolution Maija McKnightpassed out copies of correspondence and Resolution 4546 (Percent for Art). The
correspondence was a.letter forwarded to'Daryl Faber, Director of Parks, Arts & Recreation and
Kevin Snyder, Director of Planning ftom Leslie Moore on behalf of the Commission indicating
questions and issues that have arose around the`percent for art resolution and Daryl Faber's
response. Ms. McKnight noted that these items would be discussed at a future meeting and copies
were distributed for commissioners.
111. Committee Reports
Visual Art
Gommissioner Deal explained that the Commission had been asked to select'the winner of the
Auburn Intemational Farmers Marketstudent aitwork to be used as #fie promotional poster for the
2011 Farmers Market, The artworic was produced as part of Diane Sarr's Aubum High 8chool class.
Three finalists, selected by shoppers at the opening day of the Market, were forward for consideration
by the Visual Art Committee and then thefull Commission. Discussion continued about each piece. .
Commissioner Deal moved to accept the graphic piece recommended by the Visual Art sub-
committee, requesting that changes be recorrimended to the lettering and some of the coloring to
aceommodate reproduction and ease of`reading. Commissioner Davidson seconded. Motion
approved.
Commissioner Deal reminded the Commission that this yea['s ArtRageous: Artists in Action Art Fair
will occur on Saturday, August 7 and solicited volunteer support for the event: Commission Deal
nofed that there is a wonderful seleetion of'artists this year tFiat will be providing hands-on art projects
' for children and adults. Maija McKnighf reported that the layout for the event will cliange with the
addition of the Discovery Playground at Les Gove Park. Ms. McKnight explained some of the
marketing efforts underway and handed out poster and event flyers to the Commission.
PerForming Arts
David Sader reported that the perForming art committee has not met since the BRAVO season was
presented at the last Commission meeting. Maija McKnight handed out a draft of the upcoming
Recreation Guide ad that outlines the entire season and noted that the committee work will be
focused on individuaP marketing plans for upcoming perforrnances.
Public Art
Ms. McKnight shared and distributed the proposed designs for the mural panel project that the.;City is
partnering with Urban Artworks to create. The program through Urban Artworks serves volunteer, at,;-'
risk and adjudicated youtfi ages 14-18 who.are recruited and employed though partnerships with local
youth service agencies. Artworks offers an 8-week paid, job experience working in the profession of
r public art where these youth create murals to beautify our city. Youth employees receive 2 weeks of
art skills and job search/retention training, and the remaining 6 weeks are spent on the design and
implementation of a public artwork.

Twelve youth will be working on the 2"d floor of City Hall :everyday 12- 4pm from July 6- mid-August:
They will be working closely with two artist instructors to learn art fundamenfals and create 20 mural
panels that will be installed on the construction fencing at Les Gove Park (around the Activity
, Center): The panel designs were created by artist Todd Lown and have been reviewed and
recommended by the Public Art Gommittee. David Sader moved to accepf the design for the mural
panels. Patricia Judd seconded the motion. Motion approved.
IV., City Hall Plaza Art Design.Proposal „
Maija McKnight provided. a introduction to the City Hall Plaza public art project and what steps had
been taken by the Public Art Committee and Staff. Elizabeth Chamberlin, Planning Manager for the
City of Auburn then provided an overview of the City Hall Plaza and shared images of the 60% plan
set as wellas identified tfiat the artworkwould also bethe lighting fixtures for the space.
Commissioner Greg Wafson introduced artist Sheila Klein and noted that she was selected.by the
Public Art Committee and has participated in a variety of planning meetings with the Public Art
.
Committee and Staff:-, Sheila Klein provided an overview of some of her previous artwork and gave a overview of the proposed artwork for City Hall Plaza. Sheila Klein's proposal is a fber-optic sculpture
of light #hat will.both be,a sculptural art work, but also serve as the functional lighting for the plaza.
Placement of the pole, the shape of the light sculpture and the treatment of the finial and base,to
represent an aspect of Auburn's history was discussed. ,
Linda Elliott moved to make the recommendation to the Downtown Redevelopment Committee to proceed with the acorn shape idea of the light noting that the shape would likely change during the
process of engineering. Patricia Judd seconded the motion: David Sader objected. Motion approved
Debby Deal moved to make the recommendation to the Downtown.Redevelopment Committee to
consider the movement of the light poles toward the stairs and the 'interior plaza' space: David 8ader
seconded. Motion approved ,
V. New Other/Business
