Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Leslie Moore - called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. Due to lack of a quorum, the July minutes will be approved at the regular September meeting. ` Maija McKnight introduced Bruce Myers the public artist selected to work on the Activity Center Climbing Wall Gate and provided an overview of the various meetings he has had with the Public Art Committee. II. Activity Center Climbing Wall Gate Artwork Design Proposal Bruce Myer presented images and a model of the proposed Artwork. The imagery is a topographic map of the Aubum Valley and will be made of hand cut and stacked 1/8' steel plates that will be primed and painted. A black boarder "on the vertical boarders is necessary to accommodate the size of the steel, and additional elements such as a legend may be added dependant upon budget. Tlie artist noted that the use of stones in the area instead of benches would be an appropriate addition, although not in his scope nor contract. Maija McKnight, noted that this was being explored by staff and would not be part of the arts budget. Councilmember Wagner noted that this would be something that council committee could be consulted and would need a cost estimate, potential savings ofithe benches teplaced as well as a project timeline for installation. i Commissioner Deal inquired on the coloc of the climbing wall as it would be visible when the gate was closed. Commissioner Moore and Elliott noted that their preference was to have the 61ack borders only on the vertical sides and not at the top and bottom. Commissioner Sader inquired to if there would be a:interpretive signage explaining the artwork. Commissioner Moore noted the significant weight and noted that it would need to be an operable gate,in which the artwork would be attached. Maija'McKnight noted that the artist was working with the architecture firm and gate contractor to ensure appropriate weight loads and coordination of timing for installation. Artist Bruce Myers further explained the fabrication techniques and discussion continued. III. Percent for Art Resolution Maija McKnight followed up on the previous meeting and asked if there were any guestions regarding the;letter the commission drafted to Daryl Faber, Director of Parks, Arts and Recreation and Kevin Snyder,-Director of Planning regarding fhe Percent for Art Resolution and determining its applicability to the City Hall Plaza Reconsfruction. . . : Maija McKnight continued to note that initial steps have been taken to adopt language that would 'include remodeling of a.certain extent. A draft will be creafed with City Attorney and presented at a future meeting. IV. Committee Reports Visual Art Maija McKnight provided an overview of fhe activities scheduled for ArtRageous as well as distributed a volunteer assignment list. Discussion on the types of art and activities offered continued. Maija McKnight reported that the City was partnering with the Good OP Days Organization to coordinate the Adult and Youth Art Show: The Youth Art Show has been installed in the Aubum % Avenue Theater and will be on'view until August 20, and the Adult Art Show will be installed Tuesday, August 10 at City Hall Gallery and will be on view until Tuesday, August 31. Various volunteers and - judges were needed to assist with these projects. _ Performing Arts David Sader reported that the performing art committee has not met since the BRAVO season was. presented at the Iast Commission meeting. Maija McKnight noted the schedule of marketing for fhe, new season included a PR announcement, website content updated, brochure printed and mailed; and ticket sales beginning on August 23. Public Art Maija McKnight provided an update on the City Hall Plaza renovation and;the public artwork,by Sheila Klein. Staff presented to the Downtown RedeVelopment Committee on July 13, 2010 and artist Klein presented to the Downtown Redevelopment Committee on July 19, 2010; Her artwork proposal was approved and the Council Committee voted that the placement of the public artwork/lighting sliould be towards the street, versus the interior plaza as recommended by the Arts Commission. Maija McKnight noted the mural panels that were currently being created by youth as part of the Urban Artworks program, will be installed toward the end of August around the Les Gove ActiVity Center Construction Fencing. The design was approved at the July 2010 Arts Commission meeting and youth will be painting every afternoon for 8 weeks to complete the 20 mural panels. . Maija McKnight noted.that the "Faces of Auburn" murals would be removed in late August for the demolition of the Crites/Huff Building. They will be temporarily stored until a hext location can be determined. Maija McKnight also reported that as part of ArtRageous arts festival an artist would be creating additional fencing murals as an interactive community project which will #hen be placed on the construction fencing in Downtown Aubum during the demolition and building. These are lightweigfit, plastic murals that are designed to be easily installed and moved as fencing changes locations. V. New Other/Business ` Commissioner Elliott reported that the Farmers Market student poster competition artist were recognized and congratulated at the August 2, 2010 City Council Meeting. Commissioner Elliott noted that the Arts Commission was recognized for their participation in selecting the top award. Maija McKnight announced that Kristen Brock submitted her resignation to the Arts Commission. There are currently two vacancies on the Commission and a discussion on appointments will occur at a future meeting. There being no further business, the meetin9 adJ'ourned at 5:40 P.m.
