Parks and Recreation Board Meeting
Minutes
Wednesday, September 8, 2010
5:30 p.m.
Auburn Senior Activity Center, Weese Room
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm by Michael Hassen. Those members present in addition to
Mr. Hassen were Julie Parascondola, Richard Artura, Vicki Gilthvedt, John Webley and Laura Higdon.
Department staff members present were Parks Director Daryl Faber and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. Also
present was citizen David Domenowske.
II. Minutes
The minutes of the June meeting were approved.
III. Committee Member Input
IV. Correspondence/Public Input
David Domenowske attending meeting regarding a possible off leash dog park in Auburn. Daryl Faber
responded that the City of Bellevue conducted extensive research on dog parks, results can be found on
their website. Victoria BC is also a leader in "Paws for Parks" programs. Auburn has been involved in
'Grandview Dog Park', Kent is looking at Clark Lake for a dog park. Auburn has no official off leash dog
park, City Council and Planning & Community Development have not been approached on the issue.
Discussion included ideas for existing parks/areas for dog park. Fenster Property, storm drain area at
Game Farm Park, Auburndale Park, area near new Lakeland Hills fire station, Roegner Park. Director
Faber said the major issues/expenses would be fencing, parking and environmental issues. Julie
Parascondola motioned to put together a citizen task force to explore feasibility for a dog park in Auburn.
Motion seconded by Michael Hassen. Director Faber informed the board the City will advertise for
committee volunteers for a dog park task force.
V. Old Business
Lea Hill Park - Two neighborhood committee meetings have been very successful including a good turn
out of 20 - 30 people at each meeting. Input was'no' on garden area patches and folks requested a
larger playground and/or skate area(s).
Gymnasium update - Framing will begin the week of September 13, as well as the first round of concrete
work. Project is still on schedule for completion by the end of March.
White River Trail - Buckley Nursery has begun clearing the project. Mike Miller has scheduled Eagle
Scouts for a planting.

VI. New Business
Park Board manual updates 3110, 3120, 4310, 4320, 4330. Senior Center updates to be sent out to all
board members.
VII. Department Report
Summer numbers were great in camps and special events. Bravo brochures were printed and sales have
been fantastic - $8,000 in two weeks.
Police patrol is being increased at Game Farm Wilderness park, Isaac Evans park and Les Gove Park with
possible security cameras being installed at Les Gove.
We had a great deal of `thank you's' regarding the parade for Auburn Little League.
The Rotary Spray park drainage is poor as a result of clogged drain, it will be taken on as a winter
project. Veteran's Memorial spray park has other maintenance issues and is shut down indefinitely.
VIII. Adjournment
There being no further business, the meeting was motioned to adjourn at 6:30 p.m. by Michael Hassen,
seconded by Vicki Gilthvedt.
