Tuesday, December 2010 Meeting Minutes
Present: Leslie Moore, Patricia Judd, Tanya Rottle, Donna Smart, Nancy Colson, Greg Watson, David Sader, Cary
Davidson Councilmember Rich Wagner, Art Coordinator Maija McKnight, Arts & Events Manager Julie Brewer,

1. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Leslie Moore called the
meeting to order at 5:09 pm. David Sader moved to approve the October 2010 meeting minutes and Greg
Watson seconded the motion. Motion approved. Nancy Colson moved to approve the November 2010 meeting
minutes and David Sader seconded the motion. Motion approved.
Introductions: Heide and Martin Harris were introduced. Heidi is the Director of Elementary Student Learning for
the Auburn School District and will be joining the commission in 2011.
II. Elect 2011 Vice Chair and Committee Chairs
Commissioner Donna Smart was nominated at the November meeting to serve as Vice Chair in 2011 and Chair
in 2012. Current Chair Moore called for a vote. All approved Donna Smart to serve as Vice Chair in 2011. Staff
Maija McKnight called for self-nominations on the various committees: Tanya Rottle will continue as lead for the
Public Art Committee, Debby Deal for Visual Art, David Sader and Linda Elliott for the Performing Arts, and
Donna Smart for Arts Education.
III. Chair Report
Chair Leslie Moore thanked the Commission for a successful past year and the pleasure of serving as Chair.
She noted that the year had begun with some significant changes, and she was proud to participate in the
accomplishments that have taken place.
An overview of the Arts and Cultural programs offered in Auburn that the Commission advises upon as well as
noting specific successes such as the redefining and repackaging of the BRAVO Performing Art Series as well
as the various mural projects that have occurred throughout the year.
Commissioner Moore also thanked Nancy Colson for her past six years of service on the Arts Commission.
Term limits require Commissioner Colson to step down from serving, and her contribution has been significant.
Nancy Colson is a huge supporter and advocate for the arts, her contributions to the Commission will be missed.
Nancy served as Chair in 2009 and oversaw the variety of events that occurred with the celebration of the 25th
Anniversary of the creation of the Arts Commission. She also contributed greatly to working to provide the
information to all City Staff for the importance of Integrated arts into public works projects within the planning
process.
Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight reiterated her thanks to Nancy Colson and also extended gratitude to current
Chair Leslie Moore for her service and leadership.
IV. Other New Business
Arts Coordinator McKnight noted that there will be three new Commissioners joining in January. DeNae McGee,
who previously was a City of Auburn Cultural Arts Staff and currently works for the Auburn Symphony Orchestra.
Heidi Harris, in attendance, who is the Director of Elementary Student Learning for the Auburn School District,
and Ronnie Schwend, who is an artist and arts advocate and has been serving on the Visual Arts Committee for
the past year.
There will be a retreat in February 2011 for an opportunity for an overview of the Arts Commission as well as an
opportunity to brainstorm and prioritize, centered around the topic of arts being a tool for revitalization. Tentative
dates are February 12 or 19, 2011.
Director of Parks, Arts and Recreation Daryl Faber thanked the Commission for all of their hard work and their
role in the successes of this past year.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
