Parks and Recreation Board Meeting
Minutes
Tuesday,April'S, 2011
5:30 p,m.
Auburn Senior Activity Center, Rotary Room
I. Call to Order
The meeting was calted to order at 5:37 pm by Michaei Hassen. Those members present in addition to
Mr. Hassen were Greg Dobbs;:]ulieParascondola, Vicki Gilthvedt and]ohn Webley. Departrnentstaff
members present were Parks Director Daryl Faberand Parks Secretary Julie Mehl.
II. Minutes
The minutes of the October and February meetings were motioned for approval by Julie Parascondola,
seconded by Greg Dobbs �cki Gilthvedt added to February meeting as attendee).

A. Michael asked about the fence around the spray park. Daryl answered they are working on solving
the drainage issue.
B. Greg asked when a new big toywould be installed at Game Farm Park. Daryl responded in 2013 and '
he added that the concession stand should be located belween the soccer fields and baseball fields.

V. Old Business
VI: New Business
A. Jim Harkey buiR and sold mndominiums near the Dykstra foot bridge. His family has requested
naming the.bridge after Jim (who is still living). The bridge was a construction requirement at the
time of the condominium construction: Daryl Fa6er reviewed the naming guidelines set forth in
resolution 2555 including finandal or civic con;ribution to the wmmuniry. ]ulie recommended the City
research the original name of°Dykstra Foot Bridge"before ttiey make any dedsions regarding a name
change. John Webley added ttieNarkey family needs to make a case regarding how they have met
the requirements of resolution 2555.
VII. Department Report
A. Director Faber shared with the board the WRPA awards being given to Aubum Parks for Petpalooza,
Discovery Playground and Wrinkle Ranch Camp.
B. There will be a 20 x 20 stage/ rentable covered pirnic area built at Les Gove Park for outdoor
concerts and picnics:
C. Gama]ones Community Garden -Gama]ones passed a few years ago and her husband has

approached the city to lease the property for$1.00 per year for fiveyears. This will be used for a
community garden with approximately 40 plots. It is requested that any extra produce be donated to
the Auburn Food Bank. At the end of the growing season, a potluck is heid forall community
gardeners.
D. West Aubum.lake property—The city is in negotiations to purchase a two acre lake on a ten acre
parcel located on the west hill of Auburn. Thetity has submitted a grant request for funding to King -
GonservaUon Distric[which would cover 50°k of acquisition wsts. It would cost the cily $100,000 to
purchase this pristine lake propertyand it is the only lake in Auhum. There is an abundance of water
fowl as well as the potential for various Eagle Scout projects.
E. Game Fartn Park expansion—There are seven acres of state owned property at Game Farm Park
going to auction. The city and the state are Erying to reach a mmpromise on the property, it will begin
at auction at$650,000. The properiy is cyrrently zoned as"openspace".. It would make a nice
gateway into the park, extra parking or a facility for Parks Maintenance.. The smte is currently
spending $4,000 per month housing two employees. Ciry funds would be used for this purchase.
