Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Meeting Minutes

I. Call to Order, Introductions and Approval of Minutes
Chair Gollnick called the meeting to ortler at 4:35 pm, After a brief welcome, and introduction of
Director of Auburn Parks, Arts& Recreation, Daryl Faber, Chair Gollnick asked for a motion to
approve the minutes from the October 3, 2017 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Jensen
moved to approve the October 3, 2017 meeting minutes; the motion was seconded by Commissioner
Kuhlman. Chair Gollnick called the vote, and the motion passed una.nimously.
II. Nomination of Vice-Chair for 2018,and impend.ing Commission openings in 2018
a) Arts& Events manager Krueger noted that voting for the 2018 Vice-Chair would be needed and
asked for nominations for that position. Charlotte Gollnick nominated Kelly Kuhlman to be Vice
Chair for 2018. With no other nominations, Commissioner Jensen moved to approve Kuhlman as
Vice Chair. Commissioner Colson seconded the motion: Chair Gollnick called for the vote, the
motion passed unanimously.
b) Krueger noted that terms for Commissioners Dan Norman and Patricia Judd will end on January
1, 2018. Additionally, Commissioner Trudi Moses has indicated a need to step down. Following
established procedu�e, the Mayor's office will post notice of the openings. After reviewing all
applications, the Mayor will make a recommendation to City Council for appointment of new
Gommissioners.
III. 2018 Gallery Applications
Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the 2018 applications for gallery exhibitions. 92 applications we�e
received. Nine jurors, with representatives from: the community, visual artists, past gallery
participants, staff, and local arts agencies, scored each entry. Hyde presented the recommendations
for exhibitions in the three City galleries. New this year is the Gity's ability to expand exhibitions to
include small 3-dimensional work displayed in vitrines. Commissioner Longhurst moved that fhe
Commission accept the variety of design and media recommended by Hyde. Commissioner Colson
seconded the motion. Chair Gollnick called the vote, the motion passed unanimously.
IV. 2018 Project Support Grant Applications
The Gity of Auburn receives Local Arts Agency Sustained Support Funding through 4Culture, the
King County Cultural Services Agency. The City applies for the funds on a finro-year cycle:A majority
of the Sustained Support received is allocated to support programs produced by other community-
based arts organizations that serve the citizens of Auburn and/or that raise the profile of Auburn as an
arts and entertainment destination. New in 2U18 is the inclusion of the opportunity for individual artists
to submit applications for artist projects. A grant application to request funding was distributed and
published with the deadline of October 30, 2017.
Commissioners reviewed the applications and voted to approve funding for 2018 in the following
amounts:
• Auburn Art Walk-$1,000
• Auburn International Farmers Market-$1,000
• Auburn Riverside Viscom Club—Supportof annual student art show in City gallery-$500
• Auburn Symphony Orchestra—Outreach and Performances-$2;000
e Auburn Valley Creative Arts—General support of downtown gallery location-$1,500
• Evergreen City Ba.l.let-$500
• Green River College Foundation, Interurban Center for the Arts-$2,000
• Pacific Ballroom Dance-$2,000
e Striped Water Poets- Monthly Poetry Events-$1,860
o VVhite River Valley Museum—Support of free arts programming for underserved children-$1500
, • Brian Lane, artist—Support for Build an Animal—Community Print Project-$679
Commissioner Jensen moved that the funding amounts be granted as recommended; Commissioner
Judd seconded the motion. Chair Gollnick called the vote, the motion passed unan:imously.
V. 2018-2020 Poet Laureate Application
Arts Coordinator Hyde presented the single nomination for Auburn Poet Laureate that was received
from the community during the open nomination period. Commissioners reviewed the nomination
and commented on the excellent qualifications of the nominee. It was noted however,that the
nominee, who has an Auburn mailing address, lives outside the city limits of Aubum. Requirements
for the position state that the Poet Laureate be a resident of Auburn. Discussion was had about
requesting the City Council modify the original orciinance establishing the Poet Laureate position.
Moved by Commissioner Colson to have the Arts Commission recommend that the City Council
broaden the residency requirement for Poet Laureate to allow for nominees who may live outside the
Auburn City Limits but have significant ties and connections to the Auburn community. She further
recommended that the nomination period be reopened to allow nomination of interested parties who
do not meet the current requiremenfs once the Ordinance had been amended. Commissioner Jensen
seconded the motion. Chair Gollniek called the vote, the motion passed unanimously.
VI. Updates/Upcoming Evenfs
• Arts Coordinator Hyde announced the suceessful grant application to MultiCare of$15,000
towards the new Auburn Arts&Culture Center
• Arts& Events Manager Krueger noted that staff met with project architects to�eview the
mechanical, electrical and plumbing needs of the Arts &Culture Center to begin to develop a
Phased remodeling plan which will allow the opening of a portion of the upstairs of the
building as soon as possible
• Hyde reviewed recent successful arts education classes, as well as an upcoming class on
block-printing holiday cards, and one on making pearl-cluster earrings
• Hyde noted the newest Art on Main installation called "Measured Entropy" by artist Savina
Mason. She invited commissioners to visit the installation after the Arts Commission meeting
adjourned
v Krueger noted that congratulations were due to Allison Hyde for her personal GAP Award
through Artist Trust. She will mount a Print Installation at Spacewo�ks Ga.11ery, in Tacoma in
conjunction with an art exhibition she is curating.
• Krueger announced that she is working on a December gatheNreception for the Arts
Commission (possibly in conjunction with receptions for the Pa�ks Commission, Tree
Commission, and Museum Board)on December 5, 2017 at the Auburn Community& Event
Center. She noted that the Auburn Symphony Orehestra's winter coneert will take place that
evening after the reception.
e Krueger invited Commissioners to attend the Aubucn Veterans Day Parade in downtown
Auburn on November 11; 2017.
o Krueger announced that tickets are available for the Red, White and Blue Holiday concert at
the PAC on December 3, 2017 (tickets are limited to 6 per family and must be picked up in
person at the Community& Event Center
• Commissioner Colson invited commissioners to attend upcoming Aubum Symphony
Orchesfra eyents: a chamber concert on November 17 & 19, 2017 and Holiday Concert
December 5, 2017.
• Commissioner Gollnick announced events at Auburn Valley Creative Arts: Collage Card
making workshop on November 17, 2017; Holiday Bazaar on November 25, 2017(in
conjunction with Small Business Saturday); Paint and Sip on November 30, 2017
• Commissioner Longhurst invited commis.sioners to attend Pacific Ballroom Dance's holiday
show on November 30, and December 1, 2017 at the PAC
There being no further business, a mofion was made by Commissioner Jensen to adjoum, which was
seconded by Commissioner Smart. Chair Gollnick called the vote, and the motion passed. The meeting
adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
