I. Call to Order, Introductions and Approval of Minutes
a. Chair Gollnick called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm.
b. After a brief welcome, Chair Gollnick asked for a motion to approde tFie minutes from tlie
June 6, 2017 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Colson moved to approVe the
June 2017 meeting minutes; the motion was-seconded 6y Commissioner Kuhlman. Chair
Gollnick called the vote, and ;he motion passed unanimously.
II. iconic Public Artwork
Arts Coordinator Hyde moved Item III on the agenda to the beginning of the meeting. The
commission was briefed on the selection process for the Iconic Public Artwork for tfie new entry at
Les GoVe Park. A recommendation was forwardeii to the Arts Commission by the Public Arts sub-
committee consisting of community memb:ers, local artists, and city staff. The sub-oommittee
reviewed 34 applications and selecteii finalists who were interviewed in person. Each of the finalists
presented a concept for;he sub-committee to consider. At the entl of this [eview period the sub-
committee identified the artist, Peter Reiquam, with the best concept and skill set. Theartist
submitted two additional concepts to th=e sub-committee for consideration. The sub-committee sends
their recommendation of PeterReiquam's "Les Gove (S)Park"to the Arts Commission for approval.
Discussion of the piece followed. Chair Gollnick asked for a motion to approve the recommendation
of the sub-committee and forvvard it to City Council. Commissioner Watson moved to approve the
recominendatiorr, the motion was seconded 6y Commi§sionerSie. The motion passed, 7 votes for; 3
votes opposed.
III, Downtown Sculpture Gallery
a. Reylew sculptures and details: Arts& Eyents Manager, Krueger presented a Power
Point with details of the current outdoor sculpture gallery.
b. Announce People's Cholee: Krueger announced the'winner of the People's Choice
Award of$500. THe Pubiic was invited to vote fo�their favorite artwork both online and in
person at City Hall. Th_e winning artwork is"Joie de Vive" by David Vamau.
c. Selectpfece for annual purchase award: Krueger asked [he Commission to review the
artwork in order to select a piece for the Outdoor Sculpture Gallery Program's annual
purchase award. After discussion, a motion to select"Joie de Viye" tiy David Varnau
was made by Commissioner Norman;the motion was seconded by Commissioner
" Colson. The mofion passed unanimously.
d. Plaeement of purchase: Krueger asked the Commission to consider possible locations
for the placement of the new purchase "Joie de Vive." It was suggested 4hat an aicove in
front of the new Aubum Communify& Event Center would be an appropriate, well-lit and
secure location of the sculpture. Commissioner Longhurst,moved that the newly
purchased sculpture be placed in fhe alcove to 4he right of the enUance to the Auburn
Community& Event Center;the mo4ions was seconded by Commissioner Sie. The
motion passed unanimously.
e. Placement of the 2019=16 Purchase Award: The Commission considered placement
locations for the 2015-16 Outdoor Sculpture Gallery purchase award "Hawk" liy Steven
Tyree. The grassy space to the right of the entry to Game Farm Pa�k was suggested.
The locatio�sta�ds in an are:a free of bushes and other signage, between the enVy
driveway, and a pedestrian path that runs along the ball-fields in the park. Commissioner
Colson moved tHat the Commission accept thi's placement:ttie motion was seconded by
Commissioner Judd. The motion passed with 9 votes for; 1 vote opposed.
IV. Updates and Upcoming EVents
a. CommissionerColson sha�ed en in4itation for all to attend Poets on the Farm:

• Northwest Renaissance Poets fourth event on the Mary Olson Farm will be held on August 26,
2017 beginning at 1c00
b. Commissioner Watson invited commissioners to visit the Saiish Modern ezhibit at the White River
Vailey Museum.
• The exhibiYwill be open until December 17, 2017, and was co-curated by Watson and
Patricia Gosgrove:
• Commissioner Watson encouraged Commissioners to call him for a guided tour(before the
start of the school year.)
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:19 pm
