Chair Norman announced the annual planning meeting will take place in
September. The body of the Commission indicated that a four hour meeting
September 21 would be preferred. Staff will report back if that date works with
the facilitator.
Commissioner Egbert reported that the BRAVO! marketing committee had met
several times. Approaches to enhance marketing efforts included expanding
direct mailing targets, contacting neighboring Chambers and Service Clubs,
creating bookmarks, and creating "gimmick" items (magnets and fans) which
would serve as reminders to the public about the series. It was agreed by the
Commission that one-to-one contacts are often the best; Paul Dodsworth and
Herman Ansingh agreed to contact service clubs. Paul Dodsworth will also
contact Auburn area churches.
The Shades of Summer poster and brochure was distributed to the Commission.
Several Commissioners agreed to place the brochures in the South Auburn
Shopping Center.
Staff reported about the 4th of July Festival. Due to weather, the crowds were
smaller than in years past. Several Commissioners commented on the popularity
of the rides and the Childrens' Stage.
Staff reported about the July/August City Hall Gallery exhibit. It features
Gerard Tsutakawa, Timothy Siciliano, Michele Van Slyke, and Garth Edwards,
all artists who have participated in the City's Art in Public Places program. In
addition, quilters from the Calico Cat will display their work the second and
third week of August. This exhibition is in conjunction with a national quilters
convention.
The artists selected for the library, Nancy Mee and Dennis Evans, are working
with the architects at Olson/Sundberg. They will have preliminary ideas to
share with staff in the next couple of weeks. The model is not due until
September.
Five artists have applied for the Commission's artist roster. Four of the artists
have worked extensively with art-in-infrastructure projects.
Vicki Scuri, the artist selected to work with the downtown plan consultant team
showed slides of projects throughout the country. The 45 minute presentation
was extremely informative providing information which illustrated how art can
effectively be part of a project's infrastructure. Slides included park projects,
transportation projects, pedestrian bridges, gateways, public plazas, public
seating, sidewalks, and water features. Commissioners expressed appreciation at
the presentation and discussion followed as to the potential which lies ahead for
public art projects for Auburn.
The annual election of Commission officers took place. Commissioner Egbert
nominated Ron Carson as Commission Vice Chair. Motion was seconded by
Commissioner Dodsworth. There were no other nominations.
