Chair's report
A. Chair Norman led a discussion of updates on the RTA Stati°n.
Dick Deal reported that artist Vicki Scurri is still in the design
process and will consider other artistic options in addition to lighting
fixtures. Ms. Scurri also now has a contract with the architects and
is communicating more closely with them. The commissioners
discussed the need to explore options besides lighting. They
would like to look at what other transit stations are doing with the
same budget There was also discussion about how the City also
recently received a grant for improvements on "A" Street. Nancy
Krause, Downtown Association, reported that the Downtown
Association is looking at what is available for trash receptacles,
benches, etc. Ms. Krause invited commissioners to attend the next
meeting of the design committee, March 17 at 8:30-10:00 AM in
Conference Room 2, and the Downtown Association meeting,
March 17 at 4:30-6:30 PM in the Council Chambers. Herman
Ansingh volunteered to attend the Design Committee meeting, and
Lynn Norman volunteered to attend the Downtown Association
meeting. ~
B. Susan Sagawa gave the following updates on the "1999
Planned projects" handout..BRAVO!: There will be four
performances in the fall of the 1999/2000 BRAVO! series. They
are: Seattle Opera Young Artists Recital, 10/9; Auburn Symphony,
10/23-24; Puget Sound Musical Theatre, 12/3-4 at Auburn
III.
A.
Riverside Theater; and Tim Noah, 12/18. There was also interest
expressed in having Encore Playhouse theater produce a play in
Spring 2000..Grantwriting: Artist in residence programs in the past
have been difficult to coordinate due to lack of staffing and
matching school funds. There followed a discussion proposing that
BRAVO! artists hold workshops in schools and community centers
as part of their contract. Lynn Norman requested that applications
for King County Arts Commission Sustained Support Program
Grants be sent out earlier to allow local art organizations more time
to apply. The application would state that the grants are
dependent on the city of Auburn receiving monies from King
County Arts Commission. Millennium Project: Lynn Norman
requested that the Arts Commission reconvene its millennium
committee, in order to come up with a plan of projects that the Arts
Commission wants to accomplish. The members of the committee
are Pam Smith, Barbie Sharrard, Gertie Sprenger, Lynn Norman,
and Cheryl Hosking. Lynn Norman will schedule the meeting. Art i_____Qn
Public Places: Groundbreaking for the Auburn Library will take
place on Saturday, March 13 at 10 AM. The proposed art for the
Skatepark involves figures on tall flagpoles which will cast shadows
into the 'skating bowl. No artists are currently wOrking oh the C
Street offramp. The project needs to be completed before a
location for art can be determined. Youth proqram~: The summer
drama project with PSMT is being o~ganized by the Auburn School
District.
Staff Reports
.BRAVO! 98/99. Susan Sagawa reported on attendance for the
recent New Pickle Circus performance. There was a housecount of
850, 50 more than last year's attendance of the Peking Acrobats.
The discount coupons for the Sunday performance received a good
response. Marketing ideas for Romeo and Ju/iet will focus on the
Thursday night performance, which currently has much lower ticket
sales than Friday night. The staff is producing discount flyers and
student ticket vouchers for the Thursday night performance. Other
ideas for marketing were discussed, including discounts for Boeing
employees, attachments to Rottle's bills, and flyers in the Chamber
of Commerce office.
_BRAVO! 99/2000. Another booking possibility is the Russian
Radost Folk Ensemble's show "Villages through the Generations".
This would appeal to the growing Russian immigration within south
King County.
18 people attended the Grant Writinq Workshop on March 3,
including participants from local art organizations and several
individual artists. The workshop was organized by the Arts
IV.
Commission in collaboration with Michael Killoren of the King
