Chair Norman introduced Steve Le Penske, a new appointment to the Arts Commission,
and read a statement about his background in the arts. Chair Norman asked the
minutes be approved as mailed. It was noted that an amendment should be made to

Other Business
A. Presentation of the Third Street Interchange Project.
Dick Deal presented drawings and concepts for the design of the Third Street
Interchange. He discussed at length with the commissioners the potential effect
of the redesign of the interchange on the city. The Arts Commission is not
involved with the project, however, the sight may be a future potential gateway
site for a piece of public art. It is estimated that the new interchange will be
completed in approximately one year.

Chair's Report
A. Update on RTA Station
Lynn Norman reported that Dick Deal, Susan Sagawa, and Carol Valenta had a
meeting to discuss the RTA Station project. It was the conclusion of this meeting
that there be a follow up meeting to include the artist Vicki Scuri and Sound
Transit Manager Val Batey to clarify further art options for the station. The Task
Advisory Committee (TAC) has approved a design for the station, but that design
does not at this time include any artwork. Sound Transit's budget is $100,000 for
art on each of the stations. The Arts Commission may also have additional funds
available. After meeting with the artist, the Commission will decide the selection
of the artwork within the allocated budget, then will advise TAC of its decision.
The Public Art sub-committee of the commission and staff will set up the meeting
with the artist and RTA in early May, in order to report back to the full board at
the next meeting on May 10.

Staff Reports
A. Regranting Program
Susan Sagawa presented the draft of the 1999 Sustained Support Program
grant. The deadline for application has been brought forward by two months to
give arts organizations a longer period of time for their projects to take place.
The projects supported by the grants can now take place from June 18. through
December 15, 1999. The application states clearly that the grants would be
entirely dependent on receiving funds from the King County Arts Commission.
The Arts Commission expects to receive at least $6000 from King County in this
current year.
Kids' Banner Project
Mayor Charles Booth honored the 14 children who had participated in the Kids'
Banner Project at the Council Meeting on April 5. A total of 52 banners were
fabricated from the 14 original pieces of artwork. The cost of making the banners
was $9000. Prior to the ceremony the banners were hung on the stairs and in
the Council Chambers for the public to see. The next day city workers hung
them on the lampposts throughout the downtown area of Auburn.
BRAVO! 1999/2000 Season
Susan Sagawa reported that the schedule for fall 1999 BRAVO! has been
finalized. However, the opportunity to book the Peking Acrobats in spring 2000
has been lost. Gertie Sprenger, Paul Dodson, and Lynn Norman offered to write
a letter to express their concern and to discuss what necessary steps could be
taken in order that the art commission can continue to book performers for its
BRAVO! season in 2000.
Status of Staff Position Search
Susan Sagawa reported that eight people had been interviewed for the Cultural
Programs Specialist position. Those people were ranked and the top two had a
second interview. An offer of the position will be made in the next few days.
