HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-10-2000 'Auburn Arts Commission Monday, January 10, 2000 MINUTES Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Paul Dodsworth, Bonnie Egbert, Don Gardner, Cheryl Hosking, Bobby Medina, Lynn Norman, Pam Smith, Gertie Sprenger and John Stanphil1 Commissioners absent: Steve LePenske, Barbie Sharrard (excused) Staff present: Susan Sagawa, cultural programs manager, Loft Corso, cultural programs · specialist Chair Lyrm Norman called the meeting to order at 4:38 p.m. and officially turned over the chairmanship of the arts commission to Vice Chair Paul Dodsworth. Commissioners thanked Commissioner Norman for her excellent leadership. I. Introductions and approval of minutes Chair Dodsworth asked that the December minutes be approved as mailed.. Commissioner Don Gardner moved that the minutes be approved. Commissioner Herman Ansingh seconded the motion MOTION APPROVED II. BRAVO! Update BRAVO! Kids Susan Sagawa reported that people began lining up an hour before the BRAVO! Kids performances by Tim Noah and The Gentlemen Jugglers. Parents praised staff for adding the BRAVO! Kids performances. Ticket sales to the kids' performances have more than covered performance fees. Attendance at Tim Noah's Holiday Show was 461. The house count for The Gentlemen Jugglers was 270. B. Upcoming performances · Only a handful of seats are left in the orchestra section for the Common Ground performance on Jan. 15. The center mezzanine section is sold out. Staff expects the performance may sell out and is bracing for a?usy box office for $5 balcony seats. Ce BRAVO! marketing Quarter-page ads in the South County Journal are helping ticket sales. The South County Journal ran an article about The Gentlemen Jugglers performance and an ad announcing The Common Ground performance appeared in the Jan. 7 weekend tab. January Arts Commission Minutes Page 2 III. Call for public artists Ms. Sagawa reported five public art projects are slated for 2000/01. Not all of the funding ·will come out of the arts commission budget. Members of the commission's public art committee will review slides and select artists. The five projects are: a). Integration of artwork into the existing library, where the senior center is expected to move once the building is remodeled.. The projected budget for the art work is $25,000. b.) A millennium sundial project at Les Gove Park. The project will be a collaboration between the arts commission and several local service groups. The arts commission will guide the process of selection of the artist and contribute $10,000, and local service groups will contribute additional funds for the art work. c) Entry signage to campus of city buildings at 12th Street entrance to Les Gove Park. Majority of funding will come from the city's planning department. The signage project is funded at $30,000. d). A fabric artist will be commissioned to work with children to design a set of banners for the downtown shopping area.. The project is funded at $10,000. e). An artist will be commissioned to design artwork at a gateway to the community. The project is budgeted at $30,000. IV. Arts Commission subcommittees The commission appointed members to five subcommittees, however commission members may contribute to and/or attend any subcommittee meetings. a). Public Art Committee: Members of this committee select artists for public art projects. Members are Herman Ansingh, Don Gardner, Bonnie Egbert, Para Smith, Gertie Sprenger and Steve LePenske (recommended). b). BRAVO! Committee: Members review staff recommendations and help generate ideas for the series. Members are: Cheryl Hosking, Herman Ansingh and Gertie Sprenger. c). Marketing and Community Outreach Committee: All commissioners. January Arts Commission minutes Page 3 d.) Visual Arts Committee: Select artists for exhibitions in City Hall. Members are: Steve LePenske (recommended), Lynn Norman, Bonnie Egbert, Bobby Medina, Don Gardner, Barbie Sharrard (recommended), Pam Smith. e). Volunteer Committee: Recruit, coordinate and supervise volunteers for BRAVO! performances. Members are: Cheryl Hosking, John Stanphill, Barbie Sharrard (recommended), Pam Smith, Paul Dodsworth, and Bonnie Egbert. V. Other Business A. Planning and Community Development Committee (PCDC) presentation Arts commissioners discussed their presentation to the PCDC immediately following the arts commission meeting. Commissioners planned to thank the committee members for their continued support of BRAVO! and offer an update on the newly expanded season. B. Tacoma News Tribune article on Tacoma Symphony Commissioner Ansingh reviewed the contents of two comprehensive articles about the Tacoma Symphony, which recently ran in the Tacoma News Tribune. Commissioners discussed the article, particularly as it related to the Auburn Symphony. C. South County Journal Fund Raiser · Ms. Sagawa will follow-up on the progress of the fundraiser and report at the next meeting. D. Public art video production Commissioner Cheryl Hosking said she spoke with King County Librarian Fran Wendtland about the production of a public art video to be shown at the library. Commissioner Hosking said the new library has no space for a viewing station. Fran is working with artists Nancy Mee and Dennis Evans on a brochure describing "Mnemosyne's Opus." The artists also plan to distribute bookmarks. Fran is open to a photo display with captions describing the process of producing the public art piece. Commissioners discussed a public art video produced for the Port Angeles library, which wasn't useful to the library or schools. Ms. Sagawa will follow-up with Fran Wendtland. E. Update commissioner contact information · Staff circulated a sign-up sheet for commissioners to update their contact information. · There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m. The next regular meeting is Monday, Feb. 14, 4:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1. -
