MINUTES
Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Paul Dodsworth, Bonnie Egbert, Don Gardner,
Cheryl Hosking, Lynn Norman, Pam Smith, John Stanphill
Commissioners absent: Steve LePenske, Bobby Medina, Barbie Sharrard, Gertie Sprenger

Staff present: Susan Sagawa, cultural programs manager, Lori Corso, cultural programs
specialist
Chair Paul Dodsworth called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. A discussion ensued regarding
how to handle disruptive audience members during performances. Commissioner Pam Smith
said if audience members are uncooperative volunteers and/or staff should contact the house
manager who will then determine whether to call 911. Commissioners agreed a policy should be
established. Staff will investigate policies at other area theaters.
I. Introductions and Approval of Minutes
Commissioner Herman Ansingh moved that the minutes be approved as submitted.
Commissioner Cheryl Hosking seconded the motion.
MOTION APPROVED
Chair Dodsworth announced Commissioner Hosking will resign effective in June. She will
move with her family to Connecticut. The commission thanked Commissioner Hosking for her
dedicated service to the arts commission. Commissioners may forward names of nominees for
the vacant seat.
II. Update on BRAVO! 1999/2000
The Peking Acrobats performed to a sold-out house of 1,051, Sunday, April 2. Harpist Bronn
Journey played to a crowd of 400, April 8. Susan Sagawa reported BRAVO! ticket sales have
exceeded the $60,000 in projected ticket revenue. Ticket sales are at $60,269 with two
performances left in the season. Ms. Sagawa estimated sales will reach $62,000, plus the $3,500
fee for Radost Folk Ensemble King County will reimburse to the city for its participation in the
Performance Network.
Radost Folk Ensemble
The Commission will hand out carnations to women at the Radost performance on Mother's
Day. Chair Dodsworth will introduce the group. Commissioner Ansingh will hand out
carnations. He will recruit a second commissioner to help.

Possibilities for 2000/2001 season
Ms. Sagawa is talking to three different groups. Comerford School of Irish Dance could present
an evening of Irish Dance accompanied by live musicians. Spectrum Dance with jazz singer
Gretchen Matassa, which is part of the King County Performance Network. And M-pact, an a
cappella group, performing with other regional a cappella acts. M-pact is also part of the
Performance Network. As their first choice, commissioners chose an a cappella performance in
September if pOssible,
BRAVO volunteers
Due to the departure of Commissioner Hosking, who coordinated BRAVO! volunteers. The
commission discussed recruiting two or three volunteer supervisors to coordinate at events. New
volunteer supervisors would receive training fi.om current volunteer supervisor Toska Rodfiquez.
III. Public Art
Mee/Evans
The library gala opening is Friday, April 14, 5:30 p.m. Artists Dennis Mee and Namcy Evans
will attend. The event is a fund-raiser for the Friends of the Library. The commissioner's joint
brochure with the library describing Mee and Evans' piece will be available at the reception.
Public art projects
The city council last week approved renovating the old Auburn library to serve as a new home
for the Senior Center. A panel will interview several artists for a public art project at the Senior
Center on Tuesday, April 18, 1:30 to 5 p.m. Commissioner Ansingh will serve on the panel.
Ms. Sagawa will contact Steve LePenske to serve on the panel.
A panel met last month to discuss street banners. Commissioner LePenske and Commissioner
Barbie Sharrard served on the panel. The panel recommended designing banners to hang at the J
Street "campus," which includes the Senior Center, Les Gove Park, the museum and new library.
The banners would visually and graphically describe the buildings and services in the area. A
fabric artist from High Flying Banners will work with a group of students fi.om Terminal Park
Elementary to design the banners.
IV. Other Business
Commissioner Barbie Sharrard will represent the commission at a meeting to establish an
Auburn sister city organization, Thursday, April 13. She will report back to the commission.
There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 5:46 p.m. The next regular meeting is
Monday, May 8, 4:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1.
