II. Presentation on planning department plans for signage in Auburn
B. Sanders, of the planning department, described the city's "Gateways" program to
landmark city boundaries with trees, signs, artwork, etc. Plans at this point are not firm.
Gateways would be placed at the major points of entry into the city, such as downtown,
and at points where directional assistance is valuable. Once Gateway locations are
established, planning will work with various civic groups, including the arts commission,
to determine what the gateways should present and be made of. The intention is that they
should be decorative, indicative of the character of Auburn, and civically useful. The
project is ranked among the top 10 priorities by the City Council. $125,000 is budgeted
for Gateway projects this year, primarily to pay for a consultant. The city logo may also
be redesigned as part of this plan. B. may return to the commission in September to
provide a progress report.
I. Introduction and approval of minutes
Vice Chair Steve LePenske arrived, and a quorum had been achieved. Bonnie Egbert
moved to adopt the May minutes; Herman Ansingh seconded the motion.

Sound Transit has allowed each station to commission a local artist to design a poster
representing that station. Kathy Glowen was selected for Auburn, with assistance from
Steve LePenske. Kathy's work is historically oriented, and she will meet with the White

VI. Update on arts commission positions
There are two changes to the arts commission members. Cheryl Hosking is moving out
of state with her family. She will be replaced by Kristen Brock. Kristen is active in the
local arts scene and the mother of two young children. She has a degree in art history and
studio art. Bobby Medina is resigning from the commission due to schedule conflicts.
Susan is accepting suggestions for possible replacements. Candidates must live within
Auburn city limits. One area of expertise currently lacking on the commission is in
marketing and public relations. Lynn Norman suggested Ami Baunach, the community
panelist for this year's Sustained Support program. She has a background in development
and marketing. Commissioners discussed the possibility of creating an advisory panel of
community members with specialized skills.

Paul Dodsworth's positiOn as Chair will expire in December 2000. Cheryl Hosking had
been slated to replace him, with Steve LePenske as vice-chair. Since Cheryl will not be
available, Steve LePenske was asked to accept the position of Chair, with Pam Smith and
Bonnie Egbert as co-Vice Chairs. They accepted.
VII. Other business
The annual arts commission retreat will be September 11. Possible topics include hearing
what other commissions are involved with, marketing strategies, and ways to make local
populations more aware of the arts in Auburn.
Lynn Norman mentioned that King County has grown increasingly interested in being
shown that groups receiving funding are aware of their ethnic populations, and are
reaching out to those populations. Also, the Muckleshoot amphitheater, if built, is
intended to be arts-oriented in its mission, with educational outreach work and summer
arts camps. How can the commission become aware of these issues and make sure they
are involved?
There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 6:08 p.m. The next regular
meeting is Monday, July 10, in Conference Room 1.
