Minutes

Commissioners absent: Anne Baunach, Pam Smith, Gertie Sprenger and Lynn
Norman (all excused)
Visitors: Michael Killoren, executive director of the King County Arts Commission
Staff present: Susan Sagawa, cultural programs manager; Lori Cors°, cultural
programs specialist
Chair Paul Dodsworth called the meeting to order at 4:40 p.m.
I. Introduction and Approval of Minutes
Commissioner Herman Ansingh moved that the September minutes be approved
as submitted. Commissioner Steve LePenske seconded the motion.

II. King County Arts Commission update
Michael Killoren, executive director of the King County Arts Commission, updated
commissioners on various topics including: maintaining sustained support
funding, long-range planning, King County's Waste Free Holiday's program,
grant applications, and the King County Arts Commission's Performance Network
program which kicks off in Auburn, Friday, Oct. 13, with a performance by local
a-cappella group m-pact.
Commissioner's discussed ways to maintain the current level of sustained
support funding, which doubled to $12,000 this year. Michael Killoren suggested
that commissioners continue with a letter campaign reminding elected officials of
the positive impact sustained support dollars have on a community. Killoren also
proposed hosting a monthly meeting of the King County Arts Commission in
Auburn.
Commissioner Steve LePenske moved that the arts commission host a monthly
meeting at City Hall of the King County Arts Commission. Commissioner
Ansingh seconded the motion.
MOTION APPROVED
Michael Killoren will get back to the commission with a meeting date.
II. Recommendations for 2001 Gallery Exhibitions
Commissioner LePenske said 28 artists submitted slides for review. Panelists
selected work of 11 artists, plus the proposal from PTA Reflection. s for a kids' art
show. LePenske distributed a hand-out of the artists names and exhibition
dates, and briefly discussed their background.
Commissioner Egbert moved to accept the list of gallery artists as recommended
by the panel. Commissioner Ansingh seconded the motion.

IV. Update on BRAVO! 2000/2001 Season
Susan Sagawa said ticket sales to date have already exceeded 50-percent of the
estimated revenue, and that sales are ahead of where they were last year at this
time. The BRAVO! Kids subscription is popular. Lori Corso updated the
commission on BRAVO! marketing. The South County Journal published the
season in its Fall Arts Guide. The South County Journal also donated $5,000 in
quarter-page ads as part of its media sponsorship. Commissioner Steve
LePenske said he would write a letter to the editor expressing the commission's
appreciation for the newspaper's coverage of the arts in Auburn.
V. Follow-up on Arts Commission Retreat
Commissioners were pleased with facilitator Dan Mayer of On The Boards and
the outcome of the Sept. 11 retreat. Commissioners agreed to prioritize topics
discussed at the retreat and evaluate the commission's incubation program,
including outlining criteria for inclusion in the incubation program. A committee of
commissioners will meet sometime before the next regular meeting.
V. Other business
Commissioner Egbert discussed a book fair at the Harry Potter Magic Show, on
Nov. 4.
Commissioner Ansingh encouraged other commissioners to go to the gallery and
look at the new exhibition of oil paintings by Kathleen Frug~-Brown.
There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 6 p.m.
The next regular meeting is Monday, Nov. 20, 4:30 p.m.
