Commissioner Don Gardner requested the January minutes be amended removing him

The land is owned by the Lakeland Hills Homeowners Association, which has agreed to
partner with the city to site the piece. The commission's public art committee; a
representative from the homeowners association; and Duanna Richards, executive
assistant to the Mayor, reviewed 18 artist proposals and whittled the field to four artists
for the public art project last November. In January, the committee narrowed the field to
two artists and selected artist Brandon Zebold's proposal, a 50-inch, flame-cut, steel
sphere, which sits atop a three-sided pyramid base. The base is just under 6-feet tall.
Zebold's sphere depicts the history of the valley with hops, vegetation, Mt. Rainier and
the Stuck River represented, as well as a tree-of-life with roots reaching deep into the
earth, Gochoel explained. The piece will also be interactive, inviting viewers to find
items, such as a river in the sphere.
A structural engineer reviewed Zebold's design. Gochoel will present the public-art
proposal to PCDC for review this evening.
Commissioner Steve LePenske moved commission approve the proposed public-art piece
for installation at the Lakeland Hills site. Commissioner Bonnie Egbert seconded the
motion.
MOTION APPROVED
Gochoel reported three of the five sculptures of metal cut-out figures by artist Paul Sorey
are in the process of being re-sited to two planting beds at the Sound Transit Plaza and a
bed in front of City Hall. Sorey dug out the footings for the public-art pieces, titled
"Running Figures," and will return to install the figures.
Gochoel reminded the commission's public art committee of its tour to identify potential
public art sites, Wednesday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m. to noon. The committee will meet at the
Parks and Recreation Administration Building.
Gochoel also reminded commissioners to attend the Feb. 23 PCDC meeting, where the
Cultural Development Authority of King County will deliver its public-art presentation.
