MOTION APPROVED
II. 2004-2005 BRAVO! Season schedule and proposed
arts education program
Cultural Programs Manager Susan Gochoel distributed the 2004-2005 BRAVO! Season
lineup.
Gochoel reported 4Culture has discontinued its cultural arts education grants in 2005 due
to budget cuts. She and Logan applied for an arts education consortium grant through the
Washington State Arts Commission (WSAC) but recently learned their application
wasn't accepted. Gochoel said WSAC is looking for local artists working on an ongoing
basis in the schools and involvement in arts education projects by the local business
community. Gochoel said the parks and recreation department hopes to tap local
business support and expand its art education programs through a new 501(c)3
foundation designed to raise money to support programs.
Despite a lack of local grant funding, Gochoel said she was reluctant to drop the arts
education program. The Auburn School District supports the program with $200
donations from each of the 12 elementary school's PTA's, with Gildo Rey's PTA
contributing $1,000. The district also picks up the cost of transporting students to school
performances at the Performing Arts Center and technical production costs. Gochoel also
said a New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) grant comes with Carlota Santana's

Flamenco Vivo BRAVO! performance in October. Through the grant, Flamenco Vivo
will host a workshop at Gildo Rey Elemnetary School for 30 of the district's students.
The workshop represents $4,500 of the dance company's fee.
In addition, the arts education program will also include a Seattle Opera workshop with
students at Gildo Rey, an all-school performance by the Chinese Performing Artists, and
a dance workshop led by Evergreen City Ballet in conjunction with its performance of
"The Sleeping Beauty." Mary Jean McDonald, ofPuget Sound Musical Theatre, and
Kathy Garrido, Gildo Rey kindergarten teacher, plan to collaborate on an after-school
musical theater program, and will apply for funding through the arts commission's
sustained support program. Gochoel also hopes to include all-school performances of
two BRAVO! Kids productions: American Musical Theatre's "Baseball Saved Us" and
Mad Science.
Gochoel said Logan's dedication and her talented staff, who volunteer many hours to
develop curriculum to accompany the arts education programs, keep the program viable
and eligible for funding.
Logan thanked the commission for its support. "This opens up worlds to our children,"
she said.
III. City Hall Gallery
Gochoel said the City Hall Gallery will move to the ground-floor lobby next month. The
second-floor mezzanine space, where the gallery is currently located, will be
reconfigured to allow for workspace for those visiting the planning, building and
engineering departments.
Artech Fine Arts Services will install an exhibition hanging system on the wall in the
corridor leading to the Council Chambers. Art work will also hang in front of the brick
wall near the elevator and the entrance to the Mayor's office. An 8-foot panel designed to
hang in front of the lobby's glass wall and new lighting are also included in the package.
Gochoel said the main-floor gallery hopefully will get more exposure to City Hall
visitors.
IV. Arts Organization Support Grant
Gochoel recruited commissioners to serve on the arts organization sustained support
grant panel, Wednesday, June 23, 1 to 5 p.m. in Room 1 at City Hall. The commission
will re-grant $12,000, a combination of funding from 4Culture and the arts commission.

Gochoel reported members of the arts commission participated in Clean Sweep III,
Saturday, June 5. The team weeded and painted the arbor at the Backyard Idea Garden at
Veteran's Memorial Park. Mayor Lewis also approved $1,500 in funding for a mural on
the north wall of the AB Vacuum and Sewing building at 221 Auburn Way South. Artist
Bob Henry, who worked on the Clean Sweep I mural project, painted a scene
commemorating the site, one of the first stops on the Auburn to Seattle run. Henry
unveiled the mural at Clean Sweep. Footage of Clean Sweep is airing on Auburn's cable
Channel 21 at 2:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
