MOTION APPROVED
Cultural Programs Manager Susan Gochoel requested the commission add an item to the
top of the agenda concerning correspondence from Commissioner Paul Dodsworth.
Gochoel said Dodsworth recently submitted a letter of resignation from the arts
commission addressed to her and Chair Anne Baunach citing his recent marriage and
move to Maple Valley. The commission thanked Dodsworth for his 17 years of
dedicated service to the arts. Dodsworth said he appreciated the opportunity to serve on
the commission and will continue to participate and volunteer in the arts.
Commissioners discussed potential candidates for the position vacated by Dodsworth.
Gochoel advised interested applicants contact the Mayor's Office for an application. The
Mayor makes final appointments to the commission and is interested in two potential
candidates for the position. Commissioners expressed interest in recruiting a
representative from the school district or financial sector.
II. BRAVO! 2004/2005 Season brochure and marketing
Gochoel reported the BRAVO! season brochure was mailed to 13,000 Auburn-area
addresses. The printing cost was down $1,500 from previous years. Highline Community
College's printing program printed the brochure.
Lori Patrick, cultural programs coordinator, reported the King County Journal and
Auburn Reporter will continue as BRAVO! media partners with an ad match for each ad
placed. Postcards will go out for individual BRAVO! performances along with a new
marketing tool, bookmarks. The bookmarks don't cost more to print, as they are run with
the postcards, Patrick said. Commissioners discussed distributing bookmarks throughout

South King County libraries. Patrick will look into distributing a BRAVO! Kids series
bookmark in the elementary-school libraries and at the school district's Scholastic Book
Fair in the fall.
The commission also discussed distributing marketing materials in newcomer's packets
distributed by Realtors to new Auburn residents. The Lakeland Hills Polygon marketing
office was suggested. The commission also discussed improving the BRAVO! series
presence on the City's web page. Commissioner Pat Gallagher will look into getting
news of the BRAVO! series on the Auburn Boeing plant's web site.
Other marketing efforts include a BRAVO! Season news releases to regional
newspapers' fall arts guides and the commission's sponsorship of the Auburn Area
Chamber of Commerce's luncheon, 11 :30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20.
Mayor Pete Lewis stopped in to say hello to the commission and thank it for its "really
great work."
III. Arts, Parks and Recreation Plan
Gochoel distributed the final draft of the arts chapter that will be included in the City's
updated Arts, Parks and Recreation Plan. Daryl Faber, parks and recreation director,
approved the chapter. Faber will take the draft of the commission's public art policy to
the City Council's Planning and Community Development Committee (PCDC) for
review. Commissioner Nancy Colson expressed concern over the lack of funds for
maintenance of the City's public art collection. Gochoel said an arts, parks and
recreation 501 (c) 3 foundation could open up funding sources for maintenance. The
parks department is in the process of researching the creation of a foundation.
IV. Update on Public Arts Projects
Gochoel reported artist Brandon Zebold is scheduled to install his cor-ten steel sculpture
at Lakeland Hills, Aug. 11. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 24 at
5 or 5:30 p.m. Invitations will follow to commissioners, the City Council, parks board,
Lakeland Hills Homeowners Association and dignitaries specified by the Mayor's Office.
Gochoel reported Sidney Genette's lighting project at the public safety building has
slowed due to construction issues involving the roof. Genette is designing a continuous
run of blue neon lighting placed behind frosted resin that will wrap around the perimeter
of the building, as well as marquee lighting including the City's logo and a neon
installation on an interior lobby wall.
