II. Cultural Arts Coordinator
Lori Patrick, Cultural Arts Manager, mentioned that there were 50 applicants for
the position of the Cultural Arts Coordinator and that the pool has been narrowed
down to two finalists. The finalists will be brought back for a second interview.
III. Shades of Summer and Fourth of July
Comcast Outdoor Cinema and American Idol
Ms. Patrick handed out the lineup for the Shades of Summer 2005 Concert Series.
Robots will be the movie shown for the Comcast Outdoor Cinema following the
annual volunteer picnic and a performance by The New Blues Brothers, July 22.
Ms. Patrick is looking into the possibility of a full cinema series in the park next
year but mentioned that we need sponsorship in order for it to happen.
IV. BRAVO! Update and 05/06 Season Planning
Ms. Patrick reported that the Auburn Symphony Orchestra concerts were fabulous
with a total attendance of 900 people. Radio spots for the performance on KING
FM helped with ticket sales. The BRAVO! Kids performance of "Wild Western
Wonder Show" was also well received.
The next BRAVO! performance is The Evergreen City Ballet's "Sleeping
Beauty," April 22. BRAVO! Kids will feature "Mad Science," April 2.
Staff continues to work on booking the 2005-2006 BRAVO! season. Confirmed
performances include the Harlem Gospel Choir, Imago Theatre, Seattle Opera,
Auburn Symphony Orchestra, and another free performance from the l33rd Army
Band. The Harlem Gospel Choir performance will include a school performance
and a choir workshop with select high school students who will then be able to
perform in the evening performance. Ms. Patrick is looking into booking a
theater group for the series but has yet to find one. Possible ideas include Book It,
Second Story Rep, McMannis Comedies or Shakespeare. Technical aspects are
still being worked on for the Moscow Circus, which will also include a school
performance.
Dave Ellison, President of The Evergreen City Ballet's Board of Directors, asked
if the City would reconsider presenting Giselle on the BRAVO! 2005-2006 series.
Ms. Patrick explained that Giselle will not be included due to budget and
programming concerns.
V. Public Art at F St. SE and Auburn Way S.
The call for public art was sent out in postcard format encouraging applicants to
call or look online for application guidelines and a site map. The deadline is
April 18, with an initial panel review on April 21. Project Engineer Jennifer
Dvorak will serve on the panel.
VI. King County Performance Network
Ms. Patrick announced that funding for site-specific performances in non-
traditional venues is available through 4Culture. Chosen performances include
vocalists at the Sound Transit station and Consume, a theater performance. Ms.
Patrick will contact the Supermall regarding staging the performance at its annual
Magical Night of Giving. The third performance has yet to be determined, though
possibilities include: a big band in a pumpkin patch, the Airstream Project, or
Spectrum's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Commissioners favored a big band in
a pumpkin patch, and suggested the pumpkin patch near Neely Mansion.
VII. Parks Foundation Update
The Parks and Recreation Department is researching joining the Northwest Parks
Foundation, which would serve as an umbrella 50l(c)3. A proposal to enter into
an agreement with Northwest Parks Foundation must go to the City Council for
approval. Cultural programs would benefit from the 50 I (c)3 status.
VIII. Clean Sweep, May 21
The focus of Clean Sweep this year is downtown Auburn including B Street and
the alleys off of Main Street. B Street is closed off now as part of a beautifYing
project that may include a Farmer's Market. The panels from the previous Clean
Sweep mural project in 2002 will be donated to Gildo Rey Elementary.
