Commissioner Barbie Sharrard moved the May minutes be approved as
submitted. Commissioner Linda Elliott seconded the motion. Motion
Approved.
Ms. Brock introduced guest Duanna Richards, Communications and
Community Relations Manager for the City
Duanna Richards/Sister Cities Committee
Ms. Richards announced the local Sister Cities Committee--a cooperative
enterprise with the City of Kent--would like a member of the Auburn Arts
Commission to join the committee to help develop a cultural exchange
program.
The Sister Cities committee currently has a relationship with the City of
Tamba, Japan, and intends to add a city in Italy to the program. Ms.
Richards reviewed current and past activities of the committee with the City
of Tamba. Sister City Committee meetings are held quarterly with more
frequent meetings around an upcoming event.

commission will confer and have staff report to Ms. Richards with those

II. Staff Report
May Month End Report
Ms. Rose will email a copy of the Cultural Arts May month-end staff report
for commissioner's review tomorrow.
Cultural Arts Coordinator Search
The search for the Coordinator position is still in progress. A total of 12
candidates have been interviewed by a panel, comprised of Ms. Rose and
Human Recourses staff. Three of those 12 candidates were selected by
Ms. Rose for a second interview panel with herself, Parks Director Daryl
Faber and Human Resources staff. Ms. Rose reported the second panel
concluded the three finalists did not completely meet the needs of the
position. The panel is discussing issues and options in order to
successfully conclude the search.
Summer Sounds & Cinema
The brochure is currently at the mail house and will be delivered to homes
by the end of this week. The first event is Kids' SummerStage on
Wednesday, July 12 at noon in Les Gove Park, followed on July 14 with
the first concert and movie featuring The Paperboys Celtic/pop band and
the animated, PG-rated movie "Madagascar" at Game Farm Park. Ms.
Rose will send separate packets of brochures for commissioners to
distribute.
4th of July Festival
Parks and Mayor's Office staff are stepping up to assist with day-of duties
for the 4th of July Festival. Ms. Rose called for commission volunteers to
assist with festival set-up and parade operations. Arts and Craft Vendor
enrollment remains significantly lower than in year's past. Staff is re-
organizing festival layout by combining "Community Booths" and the craft
vendors so grounds do not reflect the low enrollment, and Kids' Craft
Booths will be moved to Deals Way (previous location of Community
Booths) to fill out that area. The Mainstage music and the Opening
Ceremonies will separated this year in order to best serve both activities
and the overall flow of the whole event.
Auburn Idol
The program has been updated from last year's event in order to include
Auburn Idol Jr. contest in August and to keep the evening under two
hours. Enrollment of interested contestants continues to be low.
Discussion followed regarding recruitment of contestants.

III. 2006 Arts Organization Grant
The "re-grant" review panel meets Thursday, June 15 at Parks, Arts &
Recreation offices, from 1 :OOpm to 4:00pm. A total of five applications
have been received for this year's grant cycle. The panel will review the
applications, conduct interviews with the applicants and make its award
recommendations to the commission at their July meeting.
IV. ADDED AGENDA ITEM - King County Performance Network
Former Cultural Arts Manager Lori Patrick last year included three
performance works from the King County Performance Network schedule
(a 10-year-old program of 4Culture, connecting Seattle-based
performance artists with suburban communities and venues). The artists
in this year's schedule, as in last year's schedules, have developed "site
specific," or "non-traditional venue" works in performance, music and
dance.
The commission agreed to present another set of King County
Performance Network "site specific" performances. Ms. Rose stated three
of the 14 performances offered this year by King County might do very
well in Auburn. She continued, stating she needs to interview the artists
and review potential "sites" before making final recommendation to the
commission.
V. Arts Commission Volunteers
Ms. Brock reported for absent commissionerNolunteer Coordinator
Amanda Flanery that commissioners are asked sign up as volunteers for
all the various programs through out the year the commission presents.
Ms. Rose reviewed volunteer needs for 4th of July, summer concerts and
Auburn Idol. Commissioner Barbie Sharrard requested staff email a
complete schedule and volunteer needs to commission. Ms. Rose said
she will include upcoming BRAVO performances as well.
VI. Artisans in Schools
Ms. Brock reported the Seattle Opera's Young Artists Program, "Opera
Goes to School," invited Auburn Arts Commission to participate as a
presenting partner in a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
"consortium grant" to obtain funding for the program. Funding from NEA
will enable The Seattle Opera to bring this successful school residency for
grade-school age children back to Auburn for a second consecutive year.
Last year the residency took place at Pioneer Elementary. Discussion
followed regarding selection of a school for 2007 residency. The
Commission asked staff to develop selection criteria with the Opera and
contact local music teachers to make application and/or request to have
the residency in their school in February 2007.

VII. Public Art Project Updates
w. Main Street
The proposal was presented to Public Community Development (PCD)
Committee and Public Works staff. The project will be separated into
phases to better address budget needs. The proposed phase break-down
will go back to PCD for approval and subsequent recommendation to City
Council to contract with artist team Lea Anne Lake and Tom Askman.
Golf Course Clubhouse
The clubhouse site has been recommended as the 2007 public art site to
the Public Community and Development (PCD) Committee and was
accepted. City Council subsequently approved the site. Ms. Rose
circulated several ideas/options for public art that could be included in the
Request For Proposal, including several ideas from PCD Chair Lynn
Norman and Parks Director Daryl Faber.
Public Art Assessment
4Culture completed its assessment of the City's public art collection and
staff will present its report at the July commission meeting. Commissioner
Steve LePenske has been retained to create photo documentation of the
collection for archive/file photos for maintenance records and updated
"commercial" images for new brochure of public art collection.
VIII. Other Business
Ms. Brock called for other business.
Ms. Rose shared a thank you greeting from Elaine Harper of the City of
Lake Oswego that included and invitation to the Auburn Arts Commission
to participate in the formation of a Northwest region Coalition for Public
Art. The City of Lake Oswego is developing plans for an inaugural meeting
next spring.

recipient, Puget Sound Musical Theatre. The organization will be ending
its operation later this year. Producer Mary Jean McDonald thanked the
commission for its many years of support.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:52 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager
