Meeting Minutes
Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Kristen Brock, Nancy Colson, Bonnie
Egbert, Pat Gallagher, Don Gardner, Steve LePenske, Barbie Sharrard, Pam Smith
Commissioners absent: Anne Baunach, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flanery (Excused)
Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager; Megan Myers, Cultural Arts
Specialist; Julie Brewer, Marketing/Special Programs Manager; Kristy Pachciarz,
Special Events Coordinator
Call to order: Commission Chair Kristen Brock called the meeting to order at 4:38 p.m.
I. Introductions
Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose introduced new staff members, Cultural Arts
Specialist Megan Myers, Marketing/Special Programs Manager Julie Brewer and
Special Events Coordinator Kristy Pachciarz. Ms. Brewer and Ms. Pachciarz
summarized their job descriptions as they pertain to Parks, Arts & Recreation
and the Arts Commission in particular.
Approval of Minutes
Ms. Brock called for approval of the August minutes. Commissioner Barbie
Sharrard moved the August minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner
Steve LePenske seconded the motion. Motion approved.
II. Staff Report
August Month -End Report
Summer Events
Summer Sounds and Cinema and Kids' SummerStage had a total attendance of
1,300, each averaging 250 per event.
Auburn Idol had a great turnout of approximately 375. The winners were Kayla
Renee Snell and Jordan Westberg.
Visual Arts
City Hall Gallery extended the Auburn Good 01' Days Juried Art Show an
additional 2 weeks this year and received positive feedback about the extension.
Currently, the mosaic works of Tacoma artist Naomi Stroum-Avila and Seattle
artist Jo Braun are on exhibit. October will feature oils by Seattle Artist Don
Haggerty.

The season brochure was mailed mid-August. Initial ticket sales are very good,
already exceeding the total number of subscriptions from last year. The first show
is David Scheel's Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player, on September 30th.
III. Annual Fall Retreat
The retreat will move to November this year. Discussion of topics for the retreat
followed. The Public Art Program was selected as the topic for the retreat.
Mr. LePenske suggests packets of information regarding other public art
programs be assembled for Commissioners' review prior to the retreat. The
packets will be made available to commissioners at the October meeting.
IV. Auburn Avenue Theatre
Ms. Rose reviewed current information about Auburn Avenue Theatre.
The City will operate the venue as a multi-use arts space under a 15 year lease
starting January 1,2007. Next month, the City will release a request for
qualifications/proposal to obtain a theatre business plan consultant and/or firm.
Discussion followed about the project.
V. 2007 City Hall Gallery
Ms. Rose reviewed deadlines and changes for 2007 City Hall Gallery.
The Artist Application deadline is October 16.The visual arts panel will meet Nov.
9th to select artists for the 2007 Gallery season. The commissioners on this
year's panel will be contacted by staff.
Because of the positive feedback the Mayor's office received about the extended
Good '01 Days Exhibit, the Gallery will expand to include a new "Featured Artist
of the Month", exhibiting the works of artists based in South King County.
Discussion followed regarding the inclusion of student exhibits, literary arts, and
a possible City of Auburn staff exhibit.
VI. Public Art Projects
The contract to retain Spokane artists Lea Ann Lake and Tom Askman to
design/build the West Main St. project has been approved by Council. The
project will be divided into three phases. Design for Phase One will begin shortly.
The Golf Course Clubhouse project is progressing. Staff is working with an
architect regarding exact location for the public art projects.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6: 15 p.m.
