City of Auburn Arts Commission

Meeting Minutes
Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flanery, Pat Gallagher,
Steve LePenske, Tanya Rottle, Barbara Sharrard, Councilman Rich Wagner
Commissioners absent: Anne Baunach, Kristen Brock, Lela Brugger, Pam Smith, Nancy
Colson
Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager; Megan Myers, Cultural Arts Specialist
Call to order: Vice President Linda Elliott called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.
I. Approval of Minutes, Introductions
Ms. Elliott called for approval of the June minutes. Commissioner Herman Ansingh
moved the June minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Steve LePenske
seconded the motion. Motion approved.
II. Chair's Report
2009 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Auburn Arts Commission. Discussion followed
regarding how the commissioners would like to mark the occasion. Commission
reviewed BRAVO season as being a "best of" series, what special project(s) could be
part of public art and the visual art programs, and a variety of ideas for other special
events and programs were also discussed.
II1. Committee/Panel Reports
Visual Arts Committee
Committee Chair Steve LePenske presented a rough draft of the mission and vision
statement developed by the Visual Arts Committee for visual arts programs, including
the City Hall Gallery. Discussion followed.
Public Arts Committee
Committee Chair Pat Gallagher presented a rough draft of the mission statement
developed by the Public Arts Committee for the public art program.
Cultural Arts Specialist Megan Myers reported on the progress of the public artwork to
be sited in the northwest corner of the landscape at the new Auburn Golf Course
Clubhouse. A Council resolution approving the site was established in May 2006 and a
budget not to exceed $40,000 has been recently approved for this project. Staff has
contracted 4Culture to co-administrate the invitational artist selection process for this
project. Staff will independently administrate the creation and installation of the project
once an artist is selected and approved my council.
Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose introduced Public Art Outreach and Information as a
project for the Public Arts Committee. Discussion followed about ideas for this
program.

IV. Staff Report
The 4th of July Festival will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Les Gove Park.
Commissioners are encouraged to stop by. Kids' Day took place on June 29th at Game
Farm Park. Arts Staff provided some entertainment booking service to both events and
staff support the day-of both events.
Public Art Program Funding Options will be presented at the Planning & Community
Development Committee (PCD) meeting on July 23~d. The Arts Commission will be
recommending a Percent for Art program for municipal capital projects, as well as a
private development incentive package.
The new bylaws recently developed by the Membership Committee have been
approved by the City's Risk Manager with only small changes. Council Committees are
the next to review the new bylaws before final authorization by Council.
Ex-Officio Arts Commissioner and Councilman Rich Wagner presented the Vision
Statement for the City of Auburn. Discussion followed.
Mr. Wagner gave an update on the Auburn Avenue Theater. Theater Consultant
Steve Wright gave a presentation of a business plan to PCD in June. A Request for
Qualifications was posted for architects and the City received 4 responses.
The Auburn Good OI' Days Juried Art Exhibit, chaired by Commissioner Barbie
Sharrard, will take place from August 6 -24th in Auburn City Hall Gallery.
Commissioners are encouraged to volunteer as well as attend the reception on Friday
August 10th from 4-6 p.m.
The next City Hall Gallery exhibit will begin Monday, July 9th with Chinese wash
drawings by Tukwila artist Qie Zhong-Wei and calligraphy by Auburn artist Chengquan
Jiang. The reception on July 14th from 4:30-6:00 will be prefaced with a
lecture/deomonstration of a traditional Chinese tea-service beginning at 4 p.m.
Commissioners are encourage to attend.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:47 p.m.
