Meeting Minutes
Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Anne Baunach, Kristen Brock, Nancy Colson,
Linda Elliott, Steve LePenske, Tanya Rottle, Barbara Sharrard, Pam Smith, Councilmember
Rich Wagner
Commissioners absent: Lela Brugger, Pat Gallagher, Amanda Flanery
Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager; Megan Myers, Cultural Arts Specialist
Call to order: President Pam Smith called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.
I. Approval of Minutes, Introductions
Ms. Smith called for approval of the July minutes. Commissioner Barbie Sharrard
moved the July minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Herman Ansingh
seconded the motion. Motion approved.
II. Chair's Report
March 2009 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Auburn Arts Commission. Ms. Smith
reviewed special project ideas generated in the July meeting to celebrate the
milestone.
Membership
Commissioner Anne Baunach led a review regarding the officer election process for the
Auburn Arts Commission for 2008. Voting for a new vice president will take place at the
December 2007 meeting. Several Arts Commissioners' terms expire at the end of the
year; Laurel Siegmund, Pat Judd and Leslie Moore will join the Commission in January.
Commissioners are reminded to continue recruiting Auburn residents interested in
being on the commission in the future.
III. Committee/Panel Reports
Project Support Grant
The Project Support Grant Application Review Panel came together on Tuesday, July
10th. Ms. Baunach presented the recommendations from the Project Support Grant
Application Review Panel for disbursement. Recommendations are as follows:
• $2,000 to the White River Valley Museum to support the Abby Williams Hill art
exhibit.
• $1,900 to the City of Auburn Teen Council to support cultural arts events at the
S'More Than You Imagined Event.
• $1,500 to Auburn Regional Theatre to support its production of The Tempest.
Ms. Smith called for approval of proposed funding and called for discussion. Ms.
Sharrard moved that the recommendations be approved as submitted. Commissioner
Tanya Rottle seconded the motion. Commissioner Nancy Colson abstained. Motion
approved.

Visual Arts Committee
Committee Chair Steve LePenske reviewed the Visual Art Program "tagline," vision and
mission statements created by the Visual Arts Committee. The next challenge of the
visual arts committee is to implement this vision. Mr. LePenske updated the
commission on progress of the Auburn Good OI' Days Juried art exhibit as well as the
2008 Small Works exhibit with White River Valley Museum.
Public Arts Committee
Ms. Smith reported on the last Public Art Committee meeting. Committee members
took a walking tour of the 6 public art pieces in the downtown corridor. They used the
newly developed Downtown Public Art Walking Tour brochure as a guide and to assess
its accessibility. The next challenge of the Public Art Committee is to determine
educational programs to attach to the Public Art Program.
IV. Staff Report
Maryls Erickson, coordinator for Pike Place Market Foundation's public art project, Pigs
on Parade, will be a speaker at the September meeting.
Public Art Program Funding Options will be presented at the Planning & Community
Development Committee (PCD) meeting on August 27. Commissioners are
encouraged to attend. The Arts Commission will be recommending a 1% for art
program on municipal capitol projects. The Commission will recommend that 95% of
these funds will go towards a public art project while the other 5% will go towards
maintenance or an endowment. The recommendation will include maintaining current
funding commitment of REET funds and establishing a fund to endow future projects.
The Auburn Good OI' Day Juried art exhibit has been installed in Auburn City Hall
Gallery and will run through August 24. The artist reception takes place from 4 p.m. to
6 p.m. on Friday, August 10th. Many commissioners and Visual Arts Committee
members volunteered to help put on this exhibit.
The 2008 City Hall Gallery and Cheryl Sallee Gallery seek submissions. Applications
are now available online and at the Auburn Parks, Arts and Recreation Department.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
