HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-04-2007* ~ }k CITY OF ~~' ` ~ ~ V WASHINGTON City of Auburn Arts Commission Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 4:30 pm Meeting Minutes Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Lela Brugger, Nancy Colson, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flanery, Steve LePenske, Tanya Rottle, Barbara Sharrard, Pam Smith, Councilmember Rich Wagner Commissioners absent:, Pat Gallagher, Anne Baunach, Kristen Brock Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager Call to order: President Pam Smith called the meeting to order at 4:40 p.m. I. Approval of Minutes, Introductions Ms. Smith called for approval of the August minutes. Commissioner Linda Elliott moved the August minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Herman Ansingh seconded the motion. Motion approved. II. Committee/Panel Reports Visual Arts Committee Committee Chair Steve LePenske reported the committee is now brainstorming various program ideas that will reflect the mission and vision statement developed last month. The committee also discussed where in the city visual art could be displayed and/or exhibited. Members from a local artist group that presents its own group show presented its portfolio to the committee. Staff will follow up with the group. Public Arts Committee Ms. Smith and Commissioner Tanya Rottle reported for this committee. The committee reviewed individual pieces in the current collection and discussed various issues facing the program. Councilwoman Lynn Norman, former Arts Commissioner, attended this committee meeting and provided valuable background regarding the collection. The committee continued its discussion regarding education/promotion/outreach about the collection. III. Staff Report Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose gave a brief report of staff activity. The Percent for Art proposal will now be reviewed by the Finance Department regarding implementation. BRAVO brochures will be in the mail this week. A reminder that Ms. Rose will be out of the office Sept. 8 - 17, and in an all-day panel review for upcoming Golf course Clubhouse Public Art project on Sept. 18. Guest Speaker: Marlys Erickson, Pike Place Market Foundation, "Pigs on Parade" Ms. Erickson has been invited by staff to make a presentation about the Pike Place Market Foundation's "Pigs on Parade" public art program. Ms. Erickson was presented with a list of questions by staff two weeks prior about the program and answered each question in order for the commission. The questions are: ^ Approximately how many people are involved in coordinating and executing Pigs on Parade? • What groups/committees/boards are there involved? How much staff is involved? ^ What are the parameters of the project for artists? How were these determined? ^ Can you give us a brief overview of the steps of this project from inception to completion? ^ How many events do you have surrounding Pigs on Parade? What are they? Are these events integral to the whole public art project? ^ How many volunteers are needed for Pigs on Parade total? ^ Can you say a bit about installation, "Pig hospital," (maintenance) the Sunset supper and the auction? ^ What have been some of you biggest challenges with this project? (particularly the 1St year it was done) ^ What has feedback been like from the public regarding the project? How have you dealt with negative feedback? ^ What are essential steps/ elements that guarantee the project will be successful? ^ What are steps/elements that would lead a project like this to fail? ^ Do you believe that this project would be successful on a smaller scale? For a smaller scale project (10 or so art pieces), which elements do you believe could be removed to still have a successful project? ^ What was the goal of pigs on parade? ^ What happens to pigs that aren't purchased? ^ Can you tell us a bit about your audio/visual program? ^ Do you have problems with vandalism or other damage? How much maintenance is typically necessary during the summer ^ How does an artist get accepted to create a pig design? Are they paid? How much? How do you solicit to sponsors to host the pigs? ^ How many sponsors do you have? Who are your main sponsors and how did you get them to participate? Who finds the sponsors? Discussion followed the reply to most questions. Ms. Erickson left copies of various documents and print materials with staff for future reference.
