Commissioners absent: Kristen Brock, Lela Brugger (excused) Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager, Megan Myers, Cultural Arts Specialist Guests: Leslie Moore, Laurel Siegmund, Barbara McMichael Call to order: President Pam Smith called the meeting to order at 4:34 p.m. I. Approval of Minutes, Introductions Commissioner Pam Smith called for approval of the October minutes. Commissioner Steve LePenske moved the October minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Anne Baunach seconded the motion. Motion approved. Ms. Smith introduced guest speaker, Arts Administrator Barbara McMichael from the South King County Cultural Coalition (SoCo Culture). Ms. McMichael informed the commission about the mission of SoCo and progress in its outreach since its inception three years ago. II. Committee/Panel Reports Public Art Committee o Golf Course Public Art Update: Commissioner Pat Gallagher reported on the panel selection process for the Auburn Golf Course Clubhouse Public Art Project, the final selection meeting of which took place on October 15. After interviewing three finalists, the panel selected Seattle artist Susan Zoccola to recommend to the Commission for this project. Ms. Smith called for approval to recommend the City Council contract M. Susan Zoccola to design and fabricate artwork for the Auburn Golf Course Clubhouse. Commissioner Barbie Sharrard moved that the panel's selection of Ms. Zoccola for the Clubhouse Project be recommended as submitted. Commissioner Herman Ansingh seconded the motion. Ms. Smith asked for any discussion. Ms. Zoccola's portfolio was reviewed by the commission. There being no further discussion, Motion approved. o West Main Public Art Update: Mr. Gallagher updated the commission on the progress of the West Main Public Art Project. The artists Lea Ann Lake and Tom Askman are currently scheduled to begin installation of the artwork in early December. That date is only tentative and not yet confirmed until the November 6, 2007, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of 3 Project Manager from Streets can verify the final date of completion of the overall improvement project. The Public Art Committee and staff will begin planning a dedication event in conjunction with the Streets Dept. o Long Range Planning: Mr. Gallagher met with the Public Art Committee to review an outline for long range planning with the goal of focusing on City capital projects and other unrelated projects 3-5 years out. The Public Art committee will divide into two sub committees in order to develop a final mission/vision purpose statement, a 1-2 year plan and a 3-5 long range plan throughout the coming year. Membership Committee Commissioner Anne Baunach reported for this committee. In January 2008, Vice President Linda Elliott will move into the position of Auburn Arts Commission President. Ms. Baunach announced the nomination for Vice President in 2008, commissioner Nancy Colson. Nominations are still open for any commissioner who wishes to be considered. Voting will take place at the regular December commission meeting. With the adoption of the commission's new bylaw outlining term limits, Pam Smith will step off the commission at the end of her current term this year. Commissioners Barbie Sharrard, Herman Ansingh, Steve LePenske and Anne Baunach have either expressed interest in stepping down or have submitted their resignations effective Dec. 31. Most all commissioners listed above have expressed desire in continuing their work with the Auburn Arts Commission on one of the various commission committees. Other terms concluding this year are Commissioners Nancy Colson and Pat Gallagher, who were originally appointed to fill a vacancies and have since~completed one full term, will be invited to return for a second full term. In January, Leslie Moore, Pat Judd and Laurel Siegmund will become new commissioners. The membership committee will reconvene in January to continue its work in commission and committee recruitment. Visual Arts Committee Cultural Arts Specialist Megan Myers reported for this committee. The deadline for artists' applications for the 2008 City Hall Gallery and Cheryl Sallee Gallery season was October 1. A selection panel comprised of arts commissioners, visual arts committee members, professional artists and city staff selected 24 of the 52 artists who applied to exhibit in12 shows in the City Hall Gallery in 2008. Four artists were selected to show in the Cheryl Sallee Gallery in addition to two senior art exhibits. Fourteen Puget Sound area cities are represented in next year's gallery season and a variety of subjects and mediums will be displayed. Artist receptions have been scheduled in advance and will now be held mid-week. III. Staff Report Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose gave a report regarding BRAVO. Auburn Symphony Orchestra performed on October 13th and 14th, bringing in a combined audience of 600; the performance was well received. Salvage Vanguard Theater's The Intergalactic Nemesis performed on October 26th and brought an audience of 300. The next performance will be the 133~d Army Band performing a Red, White & Blue Christmas. This concert is free with a suggested donation of food for the Auburn Food Bank and takes place on December 2" at 2:30 p.m. The Auburn Avenue Theater opened on October 25th and was very well received. Several programs are lined up including Joey Jewell's performance of Sinatra at the Sands on November 16th and 17th. The Auburn Avenue Theater will also be presenting Bobby Medina and Danny Vernon during the holidays. Discussion followed regarding ticketing logistics, future programming and management issues of the venue. III. Other Business Uniquely Auburn Committee has requested that the Auburn Arts Commission recommend a "champion of the arts in Auburn" to receive an Outstanding Citizen Award during its upcoming event. Commissioners are encouraged to submit nominations to staff by the end of November. Ms. Smith reminded Commissioners about Auburn Regional Theater's upcoming performances of Narnia beginning November 30th as well as the performance of Savior of the World presented by the Auburn Washington State of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 30th and December 1. The December meeting will be hosted by Barbie Sharrard at her family's residence.
