Meeting Minutes
Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Nancy Colson, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flanery,
Patrick Gallagher, Steve LePenske, Tanya Rottle, Barbie Sharrard, Pam Smith, Councilmember
Rich Wagner. Commissioners absent: Anne Baunach, Kristen Brock (excused), Lela Brugger
Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager, Megan Myers, Cultural Arts Specialist
Guests: Leslie Moore
Call to order: President Pam Smith called the meeting to order at 4:35 p.m.
I. Approval of Minutes, Introductions
Commissioner Pam Smith called for approval of the November minutes. Commissioner
Steve LePenske moved the November minutes be approved as submitted.
Commissioner Barbie Sharrard seconded the motion. Motion approved.
II. Committee/Panel Reports
Project Support Grant Panel
Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose reported on the Project Support Grant program.
Four applications were received for the second round of funding. The funds distributed
to arts groups through this program are provided by funding received from
4Culture/King Co. Cultural Authority to the Auburn Arts Commission for support of
various arts programs. The Application Review Panel was held Nov.14. Panelists
included Commissioner Anne Baunach, Green River CC Foundation's Leslie Moore
and White River Valley Museum director Patricia Cosgrove. Cultural Arts Manager
Laurie Rose served as ex-officio. The recommendations from the Project Support Grant
Application Review Panel for disbursement are as follows:
• $4,000 to Auburn Symphony Orchestra to add administrative staff support.
• $1,800 to Trillium Employment Services for the 13th annual Uniquely Auburn
event
• $2,000 to Rainier Chorale for their spring "pops" concert, Big Bands and the
Beatles
$865 to Gildo Rey Elementary School PTA for its annual elementary school
musical.
Ms. Smith called for approval of proposed funding. Commissioner Steve LePenske
moved that the recommendations be approved as submitted. Commissioner Herman
Ansingh seconded the motion. Brief discussion followed. Motion approved.

Public Art Committee
Golf Course Clubhouse Public Art Update: Council approved the contract
submitted to retain Seattle public artist, Susan Zoccola to design, fabricate and
install a public art piece at Auburn Golf Course Clubhouse. She will present
several concepts for the piece to staff and members of the selection panel in late
January and develop a final proposal to submit for approval to council by
February. The piece is tentatively scheduled to be installed in the spring.
^ West Main Public Art Update: Ms. Rose updated the commission on the
progress of the West Main Public Art Project. The artists Lea Ann Lake and Tom
Askman are currently scheduled to begin installation of the artwork early in 2008,
when the Streets improvement project is completed. The Public Art Committee
will work with the Mayor's Office and Streets division to plan a dedication event.
Long Range Planning: Commissioner/Public Art Committee Chair Pat
Gallagher reported on the meeting with the Public Art Committee to review an
outline for long range planning with the goal of focusing on City capital projects,
along with other potential opportunities, 3-5 years out. The Public Art committee
will divide into two sub committees in order to develop a final mission/vision
purpose statement, a 1-2 year plan and a 3-5 long range plan throughout the
coming year. The committee has completed a Vision Statement and Mission
Statement and is now working on objectives, goals and staff assignments.
Membership Committee
^ Election of 2008 Officers
Current Vice Chair Linda Elliott will advance to the Commission Chairmanship in
January, per commission bylaws. Ms. Smith called for a vote of the Vice Chair for
2008. The single nominee for the position is Commissioner Nancy Colson. Ms.
Colson confirmed her willingness and availability to serve as the 2008 Vice Chair
and 2009 Chair. Ms. Smith called for approval of Nancy Colson's election for
Vice President. Commissioner Barbie Sharrard moved that the action be
approved as submitted. Commissioner Linda Elliott seconded the motion. Motion
approved.
^ Changes in commission membership
In conjunction with new bylaw outlining term limits, Commissioners Pam Smith,
Barbie Sharrard, Herman Ansingh, and Steve LePenske will be stepping down
from the arts commission when their current terms expire on Dec. 31st. Anne
Baunach has tendered resignation due to a work schedule conflict with regular
Commission meetings, but has stated a desire to remain involved with the
Commission in an ex-officio capacity. Discussion followed regarding Ms.
Baunach's continued participation on the Membership/Policy Committee. Current
bylaw states that only current-term Commissioners may sit on this committee,
however, the Commission agreed that Ms. Baunach may continue to serve on
this committee.
In January Pat Judd, Laurel Siegmund, and Leslie Moore will be recommended

by the Mayor to Council for appointment to the Commission. 2 openings are
available for interested applicants. The Membership/Policy Committee will
convene in early January to address these vacancies.
III. Staff Report
^ BRAVO. The 133~d Army Band's 4th annual Red, White & Blue Christmas took place
on December 2"d at 2:30 p.m. 700 people attended. The Auburn Food Bank
reported over 10 large bins of food were collected. The next performance will be
Magician Steffan Soule on January 26. The proposed slate for the 08/09 season will
be presented to the Commission in February.
^ The Auburn Avenue Theater presented Joey Jewell's Sinatra at the Sands on
November 16th and 17th and had a very successful turnout. The Auburn Avenue
Theater will present Bobby Medina Dec. 16 & 17 and Danny Vernon on December
21 and 22. Ticket sales are on target for both these presentations. Staff is pulling
together more presentations for 2008, to be announced mid-January.
^ City Hall Gallery. The last artist reception of 2007 at Auburn City Hall Gallery will
take place on December 5th, featuring the photography of Nataliya Worthington,
Yuriy Manchik, Mike Dilbeck, and John Hughey. 2008 season begins on January
22, following the annual Auburn PTA "Reflections" show January 2 to 18tH
^ Public Art Brochures. The public art brochure and the self-guided walking tour of
downtown pieces have been put on hold until both the West Main and Golf Course
projects are installed, so that they may be included.
III. Other Business
^ The Uniquely Auburn Committee will honor Barbie Sharrard, Herman Ansingh, Pam
Smith and Steve LePenske for their outstanding contribution to the arts in Auburn at
the 13th annual event on January 27th
^ Copper Falls Restaurant will be open for business on December 18th with a special
open house reception. All are encouraged to attend.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
