HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-03-2007I. Call to Order
Len Elliott called the meeting to order; those members present, in addition to Mr. Elliott, were
Lonnie Sundal and Marion Nancarrow. Trish Borden was absent; Judith Whiteley tendered her
resignation. Also in attendance were Parks Planning and Development Manager Dan
Scamporlina, City Horticulturalist Kirk Hadley, and Secretary Ann Fuqua.
II. Minutes of the March
The minutes were corrected to say that the reference to the "red cedars" near the White River
Trail are actually red maples. The minutes were corrected.
III. Correspondence/Public Input
Mr. Elliott reported that he had recently returned from a crossword competition, the American
Crossword Tournament, in Stanford, Connecticut, where he placed 28th out of 700 contestants.
Mr. Elliott is the Board's celebrity crossword creator and is published in the Auburn Reporter on
a regular basis.
IV. Old Business
A. Update on Les Gove Park Tree Inventory/Map
Kirk Hadley reported that the tree inventory and mapping of Les Gove Park is now on
hold until later in the year, and will again be tackled when the growing season is over.
This is an especially busy time for him with all of the baskets and beautification areas
throughout the City in his work schedule. Eventually, the creation of the inventory and
map will be a published, allowing people who walk the park to identify the species of
trees in the facility.
V. New Business
A. Significant Tree Status/
Mr. Elliott contacted the owners of properly on Pike Street to discuss naming their tree
as a significant tree in Auburn, but we were not successful in getting their agreement to
the process.

B. Alternate Significant Tree Selection
The Board members decided to go forward with the tree found and photographed by
Ms. Sundal. The specimen is located at the Law Offices of Schneider, Gibson and
Jarvey at 901 East Main Street. Mrs. Schneider expressed interested in the designation
and is interested in recognizing the tree. It is a beautiful large Oak tree, on property
formerly owned and planted by the senior Cavanaugh family. The property was
previously spotlighted in a tour of historic homes in Auburn and Mrs. Schneider is
interested in preserving the historic aspects of the building and landscaping. It would
be nice to have a picture of the tree leafed out, which we will plan to do prior to Council
recognition.
C. Board Membership
Mr. Scamporlina reported that Judith Whitely has resigned from the Board to pursue a
new business, so we are again seeking interested people to participate on this advisory
board. We will ask the Mayor's office to advertise the positions, as we now have three
openings, and we have some events coming up at which we want a presence.
VI. Board Recommendations/Input
None.
