Thursday August 2$, 1958, in the Council Chambers , at the City Hall. The meeting was called t,o order by Mayor Denise, Councilmen Presenfi,: Aaby, Stalder, Fitzsimmons, and Towner Councilmen Absent:.Petersen, Rupert, Prescott The Mayor stated the meeting was called for the purpose of discussing the swimming bond issus in relation to the othPr needs of the City. The Mayar then requested the City Clerk to read the letter he published in both paners .regardi.ng his opinion on the swimming pool.. The Mayor stnted he was against a swimming pool until such time the City had an adequate Fire Hall, and thei.r strests were impxoved. Torr, 5pindle stated he agreed th.at the C ity needed a new Fire Hall and e.tc. but he dzd not feel the swimm.ing pool should lae considered a luxury. For one thing it would help juvenile de- linquency. He also stated that he has correspondence from all the club5 endorsing the swimming pQol. Ken Calkins statec; that he kla3 r~ceived no writtPn rreport yet• but ttzw Fir~ Sta* ion a~ in a very poor location. 1. Because *„hP C ity is grow' ~g away from the City Hall and 2. Council.man Fitzsa.rnmons asked if it wasn't premat,ure to kziow just where the taest ?ocatiorz is before the City gets a compretiens%l p1.an. Jim Ewi,ng st,ated that the Y.iwanis wrots a letter ta the Counc: stattng their plans about a swiinming poo3 and the Council was all for it. The committee appearea before the Council to answer anv questionJ that might come up. If the Council had told the commi ut, about bra.nging up about a Fire HaJ.I the;y would h:ave postponsd the swimming pool another year. The Mayor asked Mr. Ewing what the cost of maintenancR Bor thi swimming pool would be? Mr. Ewi.ng stated he did not, kn.ow the answ, to that•' but that the 3nsa.de pools we.re very popul3r. Counr.i.lman Towner asked Mr. Ewing if he would have any ob,jec+t,. ion af putting both is5ues on the ballat? Mr. Ewing statad that the coznma ytee had talked that over and they felt they would kill sach other. Mx. 3haizghntssy st.ated that the Mayor'sletter expresseci his opnions exactl.y. He thought work would he1.p delinquency just as mtzch as play. Ken Calkins svated he was not opposed to the poal but fe1t the City shoull3 not bond thsmsPlves to the full. 1i.mi.t. If an eme.rgency did ar-ise the Ci-ly would really be in trouble. Colinci.lman Aaby statPd one of the reasons he was in favor of the swimming pool was becausP of priorty. Ken ca7.kins st,ated that if it came to przorty the Fire Hall was brought up first. Chief Ludwig stated i.f it was a quesvion of priorty the "Publ Safety Buil.ding" would be first. He has tri.ed quite a few years. He stated the Jail is in a terri.ble condition and everytime thpy put a prisoner in Jail he i.s liab3.e. Mavor requested everyone present to go down and look at the Jai.l after the meetingg to see just how bad it is.
