SUBJECT: DISCUSSION & INFORMATION: Green Zone Summit
During the City Council's October 2010 visioning retreat, the Council identified the idea of holding a summit on the City's "Green Zone". The Green Zone is the area of the City that
has
been zoned by the City Council as Environmental Park District. It is located immediately east of
State Route 167, north of State Route 18, on both sides of West Main Street and incorporates
the approximately 120 acre Auburn Environmental Park. he Council discussed that this summit
could be an opportunity to bring together parties representing business, technology, real estate,
development, community and the City to strategize on how to move forward the planning and
implementation for the future realization of the Council's vision for the Green Zone.
The Green Zone Summit is on the Planning and Community Development Committee's matrix.
Staff has held off substantive planning for the Summit in order to allow for the current
collaborative work for this area with the Washington State University Institute of Sustainable Design to be completed. It is anticipated that the products of this collaborative effort
will be
useful and informative forthe Summit.
During the Committee's March 14t" regular meeting, staff would like to get feedback from the
Committee on the following questions to help in the preparation for the Summit:
1. Does the Committee have specific industries, businesses or individuals that it would want
staff to invite to participate in the Summit?
2. What are the Committee's expectations for this Summit?
3. What are specific topics that the Committee would like to see discussed during the Summit?
4. What are the specific questions that the Committee would like to be asked of the meeting
participants?
5. What other issues, concerns or ideas does the Committee have regarding the Summit?
Following the Summit, staff anticipates that substantive work on revisions to Chapter 18.33 and
the development a business plan and marketing strategy will occur. These efforts will be
informed by the collaboration with Washington State University and the Summit results.
