Re: Auburn Way South Visual Preference Survey
Background
Staff has presented to the Planning and Community Development Committee (PCDC) the 6
Economic Development Strategy Areas for Population and Employment at the November 9,
2010 and April 11, 2011 meetings. The Committee provided feedback to staff on the six strategy
areas and staff will be working on initial policy development as part of the 2011 Annual
Comprehensive Plan Amendments to set the stage for future sub-area planning efforts.
Discussion
At the Committee's July 11, 2011 meeting, staff will lead the Committee through a visual
preference survey exercise for the streetscape of Auburn Way South. This exercise is a proven
visual planning method that offers the opportunity to identify preferred streetscape design
elements for Auburn Way South that can serve as a foundation for future capital projects and the
pursuit of potential funding sources to accomplish these projects.
Included in your packet is a Visual Preference Survey for the Auburn Way South Corridor, between State Route 18 and M Street SE. A Visual Preference Survey is a tool for the
Committee to give feedback on planning and design alternatives as well as rate visual concepts
including the following:
• Street Corridor
• Access and Sidewalks
• Street Lights
• Public Art

As part of this exercise, staff will ask the Committee to give feedback on streetscape elements
that they do want to see as well as general feedback on urban design elements that the Committee also does not want to see - e.g. continuous row of one story buildings.
For the July 11, 2011 Committee meeting, staff requests that the Committee have their surveys
filled out and we will discuss the results during the review of the Visual Preference Survey.
