Tuesday, July 12, 2011 Meeting Minutes
Present: Cary Davidson, Linda Elliott, Heidi Hams, Patricia Judd, DeNae McGee, David Sader,
Ronie Schwend, Greg Watson, Councilmember Rich 1Nagner, Arts Coordinator Maija
McKnight, Arts and Events Manager Julie Brewer Theater Specialist Jim Kleinbeck Excused:

1. , Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair
Patricia Judd called the meeting to order at,4:30 pm. Heidi Harris moved to approve the June
2011 meeting minufes and Leslie Moore seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved.
Chair Judd noted a agenda addition, to discuss a"Rotating Outdoor Gallery"
II. ° Nominations of Vice-Chair .
Patricia Judd nominated Greg Watson for#he vacant Vice Chair position. Commissioner Ronie
Schwend made a motion to accept Commissioner Watson as Vice=Chair. Commissioner Leslie
Moore seconded the motion. Motion aabroved.
111. International Farmers Market Student Poster
Commissioner Ronie Schwend presented the top three posters that were selected by#he Visual
Arts Committee and presented the one recommended to serve as the poster for the 2012
. Aubum Intemational Farmers Matket. The artwork was done as part of a Aubum High School
Graphic Design Class taught by Diane Saar: Linda Elliott moved to approve the
recommendation of the Vis _ _ ual Arts Committee for the 2012 Farmers Market Poster, David
Sader seconded the motion. Motion approved.
IV. Rotating Outdoor Gallery
Staff Maija McKnight reported that the Downtown Council Committee has approved funding in
fhe amount of $50;000 for pubtic art.. It has been presented and recommended that the funding
go toward the creation of a downfown rotating outdoor sculpture gallery, specifically building the
pedestals that artwork on loan could be installed. Staff McKnight distributed a draft of ten
identified locations throughout the downtown core and further explained sample models.
Commissioner Watson mentionecl:that celebratory events could be coordinated around the
changing of the artwork as well as a people's choice award which could be purchased from the
artist and become part of Aubum's Public Art Collection. Discussion continued. The
commission was in support of the rotating outdoor gallery.
V. .Poet Laureate Discussion -
Patricia Judd presented the idea of creating_a Poet Laureate position, an honorary position
whicti fradifionally would be officially appointed by a govemmerrt and is oiten expected to
compose poems for special occasions and other govemment events. The idea has been
focwarded to the Arts Commission:for discussion and support to move forward fo develop
guidelines and a selection process. Discussion continued. Commissioner Leslie Moore moved
in support of establishing an honorary position of Poet Laureate, Linda Elliott seconded the
motion. Motion.Approved. Staff will proceed and bring back to the commission guidelines,
selection process and criteria.
VI. Public Art Update
• Maija McKnight provided an updafe on the progress fordeveloping a storefront art
program. Shunpike, a non profit organization, that manages Tacoma and Seattle
program is putting together a proposal for their involvement. Storefronts will be
discussed at a future meeting.
• The percent for art resolution will have some potential wording changes that will then be
taken through Council Com "miftee and fulf Council fo"r discussion.
• Staff McKnight distributed photographs of #he artwork that wilF be installed on the new
Activity Center: Artist Bruce Myers will be installing the artwork in August in coordination
with the construction schedule.
VII. Performing Arts Season
Staff Jim Kleinbeck provided an ovecview of the Performing Arts Season for 2011-2012 aswell
as presenting the new design femplate in which the markefing materials will follow.
VIII. Upcoming Community Events Staff McKnight nofed tfie upcoming ArtRageous Arts Festival on Saturday, August 6 and
mentioned that.Commissioner Watson would be providing a demonstration on Raku pottery and
Commissioner Schwend would be selling her artwork. McKnight passed around a volunteer
sign-up sheet.
Good 01' Days student art show will be on display from July 11 - August 26 in the Auburn
Avenue Theater and the Adult Juried Art Show will be on view from August 9-September 6 in
City Hall,
