AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, AMENDING
SECTION 2.51_020 OF THE AUBURN CITY CODE
RELATING TO COMPENSATION OF COUNCIL
MEMBERS AND THE DEPUTY MAYOR
WHEREAS, Section 2.51.020 the Aubum City Code establishes the
compensation levef for mem6ers of the City Council and for the Deputy Mayor;
and,
WHEREAS, State law provides that the compensation of elected or
appointed city council members may not be increased or diminished after their
election or dwring theircurrent term; and,
WHEREAS, council salaries have not been increased for six years; and
WHEREAS, the role and scope of work foc each councilmember has
increased sign�cantly over the past six years; and
WHEREAS, a comparable study was performed among cities in the
region, and the compensation increase proposed herein still leaves Aubum
councilmember salaries in the Jower end of comparable cities; and
WHEREAS, in light of the signficant involvement of Aubum City
" - - - Councilmembers in regional committees to which fhe members- have -been - �
appointed, it is appropriate to provide for an additional level of compensation for
councilmember attendance at such regional meetings; and

WHERAS, it is advantageous for the Gity to have its councilmembers
attending regional boards, commissions or committees, and to the extent that a
per-meeting stipend encourages and incentivizes that participation, it would be
6eneficial forthe City; and
WHEREAS, 'rf the City Council wishes to provide for an increase the level
of compensation for council members subsequently elected or appointed, the
ordinance would need to be adopted in advance of the election of the council
positions to which such iricrease would apply.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN,
WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN as follows:
Section 1. Amendment to Citv Code. That Section 2.51.020 of
the Aubum City Code be and the same hereby is amended to read as follows:
2.57.020 Council merriber's compensation.

B. In addition_to the city council compensation specified above,

C. The compensation provided for in this section §hall be paid
on the eighth and twenty-4hird day of each month succeeding the month in
which services are perFormed, by proper warrants drawn upon the finance
director of the city. Should the payday fall on the weekend or holiday,
paychecks will be issued on the previous workiiay. (Ord. 6191 § 4, 2008;

Section 2. Imalementation. The Mayor is hereby authorized to
implement such administrative procedures as may be necessary to carry out the
directions of tHis legislation,
Section 3. Severabilitv: The provisions of this ordinance are
declared to be separate and severable. The invalidi.ty of any clause, sentence,
paragraph,.subdivision, section or portion of this ordinance, or the invalidity of the
application thereof to any person or circumstance shall not affect the validity of�
the remainder of this ordinance, oc the validity of its application to other persons
or circumstances.

Section 4. Effective date. This Ordinance shall take effect and be
in force five days from and after its passage, approval and publication as
provided by law, and as specified herein.
