I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes:
ChairPatricia Judd called the meeting to order.at 4:30 pm. DeNae McGee moved to
approye the July, 2011 meeting minutes and Greg Watson seconded the motion. All
apprbved. Motion aoo�oved.
11. ArtRageous Evaluation
Staff Maija McKnight provided an overview of ArtRage.ous that was held on Saturday,
August 6, 2011. Commissioners that were in attendance.were encouraged to share
their obser4ations and comments: Staff noted that the dendors selling their artwork
evaluafions shoirved that it was not profitable for them to be in attendance. A general
comment was that ArtRageouswas a'kids-event. Commissioner Deal noted that when
initially conceived it was not created specfically for children but rather strove to be
multi-generational by offering all levels of art making. Discussion of moving the festival
downtown in order to offera variety of experiences for adults and children was
discussed. Commissioner McGee inquired if there was an overarching goal for the
festivaL :Staff noted fhat there was no official goal statement, but this would be the work
of the Visual Art Committee and will be a future agenda item.
III. Public Art Update
A new mural is being planned for th"e 'R' street underpass along the White River Trail.
This area,had been partially painted by RachaelDotson as part of the White River Trail
e�ctensio� mural, but had been damaged by graffiti. A design for the new mural was
shared, which was inspired by aerial views of the area and simplified into geometric
shapes. The mural will be done in sections with Vandalguard being applied as soon as
the painting is finished to minimize the damage of graffiti. Commissioner Leslie Moore
moved for approval of the.design. Debby seconded the motion. Motion anqroved.
The Neely Mansion Association in partnership with the 4CultureArts, Heritage and
Historic Preservation Programs, is seeking letters from individuals or organizations
interested in stimulating community participation through the creation of public events
and activities at the historic Neely Mansion and surrounding grounds. Projects will
explore the richly layered history of this restored 19th century home while engaging the
community in a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cultural relevance of this
historic King County Iandmark near Auburn, Washington. Information was distributed to
commissioners.
The artwork at the;Les Gove Gymnasium by Bruce Myers has been completed. There
will be a dedicatio� of the building and the art in October and an invitation will be
distributed once a date is confirmed.

Storefronts Auburn is being coordinated to begin in this calendar year. The City has
entered into contract with Shunpike that will manage the program. City Staff are
workirig with Shunpike to identify business owners that wish to participate (planning
staf� and coordinating the call-to-artists and artist selection (parks staf�. The first
installation will occur in this calendaryear.
Commissioner G[eg Watson noted that he, Economic Development City Staff and
severaJ artists had a meeting to discuss the potential and interest level of potentially
deVeloping artist live/wo�lc housing. Follow-up meetings with various individuals and
experts have provided additional information in which could be used to develop such a
space.
Greg Watson also noted that the Director and Board of the White River Valley Museum
voted to host a contemporary Japanese art exhibition in April 2013. This could provide .
some great programming opportunities aswell as a exhibition of regionally notable
artists. , .
IV. BRAVO Pertorming Arts
Staff.Maija McKnight distributed the BRAV02011-2012 Performing Art Season
brochure and marketing plan: The number of days programmed increased from 29
(2010-11 Season)to Z0. The season line-up is diverse with new and repeat
programming, and features music, dance, theater, film series and,comedy. Last year
the marketing ofthe Au6urn Avenue Theater and the performances atthe Auburn PAC
was combined, thisyear we again combined the programming offerings into one
seamless Series and changed look and feel of fhe marketing materials to showcase the
new year.
With the new season and programs, we hope to reach new audiences. The Arts
Commission as community members can assist with not only recommendations, but
serving as representatives in the community to share the information and extend the
invitation. Staff distributed a letter that would be fr�om the commissioner that can be
used as an invitation to friends and colleagues offering them discount tickets to
upcoming programs. Various ideas were shared regarding marketing to reach new
audiences including announcements to service groups, screening the promotional video
prior to the local AMC Movie Theater screening of the Metropolitan Opera and
advertising on the Sounder. Maija McKnight noted that on the October agenda,
commission would continue this conversation but focus on specificprograms in which
individual marketing would be appropriate.
V. Upcoming Community Events and Announcements
Maija McKnight noted that November the commission will have nominations for Vice
Chair and that Linda Elliott's term will be ending at the end ofthe calendar year.
Triumph of the American Spirit, 9/11 program with the Aubum Symphony will be on
Sunday 9/11 at 2:30 at the Performing Arts Center. The Govemor will be in attentlance
and making remarks.
Theannual update to the Planning and Community DevelopmenYCouncil Committee
will be on Monday, November 14, 5:30 pm and arts commissioner attendance is
encouraged.
Seattle Opera will be offering an Opera in Schools program throughout the school year.
They have changed 4he program and wilf be a different format, but are committed to
offering this opportunity to Aubum students.
Two grants will be submitted in September, including: Washington State Arts
Commission in support of the Outdoor Sculpture Gallery ($5,000) and 4Culture
Facilities Grant for a:s#age cover to be installed in Les Gove Park for outcloor concerts
and presentations ($10,000).
