HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-06-2011 City of Auburn Arts Commission, Home of Ronie and Jim Schwend Tuesday, December 6, 2011 Meeting Minutes Present: Deborah Deal, Linda Elliott, Patricia Judd, Leslie Moore, Tanya Rottle, Ronie Schwend Greg Watson Cary Davidson, Heidi Harris, Colleen Maloney Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight,Arts and Events Manager Julie Brewer Excused: DeNae McGee Call to Order Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Chairperson Patricia Judd called the meeting to order at 5:40 pm. Greg Watson moved to approve the November 2011 meeting minutes and Heidi Harris seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved Maija McKnight introduced new Arts Commissioner Colleen Maloney Recently appointed, Colleen has been serving on the Visual Arts Committee for the past 3 years and is a retired graphic designer and a artist specializing in printmaking. I. Voting for Vice-Chair At the November meeting Ronie Schwend was nominated for the position of vice chair Being no additional nominations Linda Elliott moved to elect Ronie for the Vice Chair position in 2011 Debby Deal seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. II. Poet Laureate Maija McKnight provided a background for the establishment of the Poet Laureate position and presented the the sub-committee's recommendation. Two applications were received and the sub-committee recommends Richard (Dick) Brugger for this position. Discussion continued and Debby Deal moved to recommend Richard (Dick)Brugger to Mayor Lewis as the first ever Poet Laureate. Linda Elliott seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. McKnight then described that the recommendation would be forwarded for the Mayor's decision and appointment. It is a hope that the Poet Laureate will make their first public appearance as part of the Uniquely Auburn event on Sunday January 29, 2012. Staff noted that various programming opportunities will be explored with the individual once appointed. Ill. Outgoing Commissioner Linda Elliott has been a valuable member of the Arts Commission for the past six years and the Commission term limit by-laws designate two terms of three years. Commissioner Elliott has been a extremely valuable member to the commission and her advocacy and support of the arts in Auburn unwavering. Linda will continue to serve on the Public Art Committee and is welcome to apply to serve on the commission again in 2013. Linda Elliott noted the changes that have occurred throughout her tenure and emphasized the growth and support of the arts in Auburn.
