Tuesday, April 10, 2012 Meeting Minutes
Present: Greg Watson, Patricia Judd, Nickole Evans, Colleen Maloney, Heidi Harris, Dan
Norman, DeNae McGee, Leslie Moore, Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight, Arts and Events
Manager Julie Brewer, Theater Coordinator Jim Kleinbeck, Arts Assistant Ashley Schalow,

I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes:
Chair Greg Watson called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. Leslie Moore moved to approve the
March 2012 meeting minutes and Dan Norman seconded the motion. All approved. Motion
approved.
II. BRAVO 2012 -13 Performing Arts Season
Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight provided an overview of the 2011 -12 season that will culminate
in May including a handout providing a summary of revenue for compared to years prior. Maija
McKnight discussed what staff looks for when working to book performances as part of a
Season and identified certain programming areas in which have changed from year to year
based on our experiences. Auburn Avenue Performances, Ave Kids Performances, Performing
Arts Center Performances, Film Series, and Auburn Community Players, and Rentals were all
discussed and performances that have been scheduled were shared with the group. The
BRAVO performing arts season will launch at ArtRageous in which we will have publicity
material created and provide various opportunities during the festival. Commissioner Dan
Norman inquired on the success of film screenings and film festivals and discussion continued.
III. Public Art Updates and Discussion
Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight provided an overview of the City of Auburn Public Art Program
and distributed copies of the brochure that was printed in 2009. Chair of the Public Art
Committee, Tanya Rottle reviewed the previous work of the Public Art Committee and shared
the vision and mission statement with the commission. Staff provided a list of upcoming and
potential future projects and asked the commission to consider these as well as brainstorm
additional opportunities. The public art committee will take this input and create a plan /priorities
for 2012- 2014 based on these recommendations. This plan will be presented an reviewed at a
future commission meeting.
Upcoming projects and suggestions included:
• Revision of language on the Percent for Art Resolution
• Community Center Public Artwork with artists Virginia Paquette
• Outdoor Sculpture Gallery
• Lea Hill Park
• Public Artwork in Private Development (brochure outlining incentives)
• Mural program and projects
• Temporary Public Art
• Environmental Park (bird viewing tower)
• Auburn Valley Humane Society
• Additional Utility Boxes to have vinyl installed
• Mary Olson Farm, trail side interpretation
• Potable works program
Lea Hill Park will be discussed by the public art committee on Tuesday, May 8t" with the
attendance of staff and consultants that are currently creating the design.
IV. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events
Commissioner Colleen Maloney noted the Seattle Times press for the Storefronts program as
well as the White River Valley Museum and extended her kudos. Commissioner Nicole Evans
inquired on the attendance at the Auburn Valley Creative Arts Storefront opening event, and
staff shared that it was a packed house with many supporters. Maija McKnight distributed a
brief survey to collect feedback in order to set the agenda for the Saturday, June 23rd Arts
Commission Retreat. Julie Brewer provided an overview of the variety of art -based projects that
will be happening during Clean Sweep on Saturday, May 5, 2012.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
