HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-03-2012Minutes Tuesday, April 3, 2012 11:00 a.m. Conference Room Parks, Arts & Recreation Administration Building Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 11:05 am by Bryce Landrud. Those board members attending in addition to Mr. Landrud were Lonnie Sundal and Jan Speer. Also present at the meeting were Parks Horticulturist Richard Valenti, and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. Minutes The February meeting minutes unanimously approved. The March minutes approved with following change: the Green Vase Zelkova tree for Arbor Day is donated by the Auburn Garden Club, the Triumph Elm is donated by the Urban & Community Forestry Program in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. III. Correspondence/Public Input Jan Speer would like the Tree Board to lead by example, she wants to educate citizens that the board is not the tree police', we are here to educate, promote the neighborhood tree planting program, and aid code enforcement with tree related issues. Bryce welcomes Richard Valenti, Auburn Parks Horticulturist. Jan expressed her disappointment regarding the 'post winter storm tips' article not being picked up by the Auburn Reporter. Flyers were not printed up as it did not get approved by Parks Director Daryl Faber. Bryce would like to see links to Tree Board information on the city website such as ISA website link, significant tree information & history, Arbor Day information & history. He also noted he was not able to find the press release regarding post storm tree care on the city website. IV. Old Business Ballard Park significant tree — Julie Mehl to add to agenda for City Council meeting on April 16. AUBURN *MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED V. New Business VI. Board Recommendations/Input Karen Wright has resigned from the board as of 3/27/12. Julie Mehl will make sure we advertise for the two Tree Board open positions. Bryce added he would like to see local HOA citizen(s) on the board. Jan suggested we have a booth at the 4th of July event. Bryce will look into staffing the booth (providing pamphlets, educating citizens etc). Jan also recommended having a presence at the Auburn International Farmers Market booth. Julie Mehl will look into. VII. Department Report Richard reports there is a neighborhood tree planting in memory of Cameron Christian. They will be planting one Blue Giant Sequoia and two Weeping Alaska Cedars near the Auburn Golf Course at the end of 100th street in a gated community. Jan asked if Rich reviews these plans and he responded yes, he drew up the design. A press release will be written. R Street tree update — Richard reports the trees are going downhill as a result of the January winter storm, they will continue to decline and lose their former beauty. The Street Department is responsible for the trees, Bryce adds they most likely won't take action unless the trees begin to affect the street. Median report — Richard reports various medians will now be maintained by the Parks Department (formerly maintained by Street Dept). The median on R Street will be planted with Thundercloud Blooms. Bryce suggested 'Purple Pony' trees as they grow 6 — 8" per year and stay small. Eight cherry trees are to be planted at the new Auburn Valley Humane Society per Richard. Quotes are being reviewed/processed. VIII. Adjournment There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:58 am. Approved this I 2012 �C
