HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-11-2012City of Auburn Arts Commission, City Hall Annex, One Main, Conference Room 2 Tuesday, September 11, 2012 Meeting Minutes Present: Greg Watson, Alan Abdulkader, Nickole Evans, Patricia Judd, Tanya Rottle, Ronie Schwend, Heidi Harris, Dan Norman Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight, Council Liaison Rich Wagner Excused: Cary Davidson, Colleen Maloney, Leslie Moore, DeNae McGee I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Greg Watson called the meeting to order at 4:31 pm. Ronie Schwend moved to approve the August 2012 meeting minutes. Nickole Evans seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. Guests Allison Vandenberg, The Auburn Downtown Association Chair, and Elizabeth Chamberlain, Planning Manager were introduced. Public Art Centennial Park Staff provided an update to the recently stolen sculpture "The Long Look" by Brad Rude. Conversation with artist as well as the insurance agency has begun to look into replacement. Lea Hill Park Commissioner Patricia Judd provided an overview of the selected artist for the Lea Hill Park project. A RFQ was circulated with 50 applications, an invitation to 3 artists was extended for them to develop a full proposal. The artist Michael McLaughlin was selected and will be working with him to fine - tune the design, placement as well as insure anti -theft measures. Discussion continued. Outdoor Sculpture Gallery Staff provided an overview and history of the Outdoor Sculpture Gallery program. A call -to- artists was circulated in July and we received submittals from 17 artists with a total of 30 sculpture pieces. The details of the call were re- stated, a map with the pedestal locations was distributed, and an overview of the selection process was introduced. The commission reviewed each of the submitted artworks and the associated materials (artist statement, resume) and determined the seven that would be extended a loan agreement. The commission eliminated the sculptures that were not already constructed as it did not meet the submittal criteria, no more than one artwork per artist was selected, and a variety of sizes and medium were taken into consideration. The commission's selection will be presented to the Planning and Community Development Council Committee on Monday, September 24, 2012. Staff noted that specific logistics of the program as a whole would be discussed at an upcoming meeting. III. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events Commissioner Heidi Harris shared her experience of attending the Poulsbo Art Walk event. Ronie Schwend extended the invitation to the Commission to attend the Auburn Valley Creative Arts Open House on Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22. Staff noted that a written invitation with the dates and times would be circulated.
