A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, IN SUPPORT
OF AMTRAK
WHEREAS, the City of Auburn has been a railroad town for over a
hundred years, and its first City Park is Terminal Park, as that was the end of the
line for the railroad coming to the Northwest; and
WHEREAS, the City of Auburn, Washington has had a long and fruitful
relationship with the Nation's railroads and has long been a supporter of Amtrak,
as illustrated by the fact that Mayor Pete Lewis sits on the National Amtrak
Advisory Board; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak is celebrating its 42nd year as America's Railroad;
and
WHEREAS, Amtrak remains a vital part of the national transportation
network and economy. With record ridership and strong financial performance,
Amtrak is successfully fulfilling its national mission and daily demonstrating its
value to the country; and
WHEREAS, a new Amtrak stop in Auburn is a priority for the
transportation network for the City of Auburn, and for the cities of Algona, Pacific,
Covington, Maple Valley, Black Diamond, Enumclaw and for Lake Tapps; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak has been underfunded and has too many conflicting
missions with only year to year funding to plan, build and maintain safe
infrastructure and provide national surface transportation mobility and

connectivity. In addition, multiple layers of oversight have been added to what
Congress intended to be a 'private' company that carries out public policy; and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes it is time for dedicated, multi-year
federal operating and capital funding for Amtrak and intercity passenger rail; and
WHEREAS, if Congress provides predictable and needed levels of federal
funding support, Amtrak and our state partners can better deliver a future of
improved reliability, enhanced capacity, more service, increased speeds and
reduced trip times on the Northeast Corridor and other passenger rail corridors
around the country, including the development of new ones.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN,
WASHINGTON, HEREBY RESOLVES as follows:
Section 1. That the City Council hereby expresses its support for
Amtrak and for a new Amtrak stop in Auburn, and states its belief that it is time
for dedicated, multi-year federal operating and capital funding for Amtrak and
intercity passenger rail.
Section 2. The Council further states that it believes that if Congress
provides appropriate levels of federal funding support, Amtrak and its private and
public partners can better deliver a future of improved rail reliability, enhanced
and increased capacity, improved and additional services, with reduced trip times
for rail passengers across the country.
Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in full force
upon passage and signatures hereon.
