Tuesday, October 7, 2014 Meeting Minutes
Present: Nancy Colson, Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Colleen Maloney, DeNae McGee, Dan Norman,
Ronie Schwend, Greg Watson, Laura Westergard, Arts and Events Manager Julie Krueger, Arts
Coordinator Maija McKnight, Arts and Events Assistant Kelsey D'Andrade, Guests: Monica Tocas,

Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes
Chair Colleen called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Nancy Colson moved to approve the
September 2014 meeting minutes. Colleen Maloney moved to seconded the motion. All approved.
Motion approved.
Presentation on Interurban Center for the Arts (ICA) at GRCC
Commission welcomed Monica Tocas, whom provided an overview of the Green River Community
College Foundation — Interurban Center for the Arts. The Green River Community College
Foundation sponsors the ICA Art Docent program, which provides training and resources for
volunteer art docents in 30 elementary schools throughout seven school districts and serves more
than 15,000 K -6 students annually. Trained volunteers visit the classroom once a month from
October through May (eight lessons) for approximately an hour. Each lesson covers one influential
artist and their work, some basic art concepts, and ends with an age- appropriate hands -on art project.
Discussion continued. Copies of ICA contact and support brochures were distributed to the
commission at the end of the meeting.
III. Presentation on One Reel
One Reel consultant Andrea Wagner presented information to the Commission concerning
partnership with the Muckleshoot Indian Tribute (MIT) to transform the White River Amphitheater by
adding components of art, culture, and education. Their overarching vision seeks to expand the
usage of the property beyond the existing concert business; give the facility its own voice and brand
that speaks positively to audiences and the community; create a new arts education organization
based at the Amphitheatre to serve the region; and create the opportunity for Tribal members to take
over these new activities. The project is currently in research and planning phase.
Discussion continued and included comments by several of the commissioners, including DeNae
McGee and Nancy Colson sharing prior experiences of the Auburn Symphony Orchestra and
experiences in trying to rent the space for a concert, Laura Westergard noted a potential for
collaboration with Auburn Valley Creative Arts, Greg Watson spoke of potential with college students
affiliated with the Tribal College, and Colleen Maloney mentioned the Southwest Indian Art Fair that is
held annually in Tucson, Arizona.
IV. 2014 -2015 Downtown Sculpture Gallery
Staff Maija McKnight presented a staff proposal for the potential purchase of Ken Hall's Origami
Fuchsia that was on display as part of the 2013 -14 Downtown Sculpture Gallery. The potential
placement for this sculpture would be in Sunset Park, in the Lakeland Hills area and funded through
the existing budget. Discussion continued. Laura Westergard moved to recommend the purchase of
Origami Fuchsia, DeNae McGee seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved.
Staff noted that a future agenda item would include the review of the published rules surrounding the
People's Choice award and potential adjustment..
V. Cafe Review
CaFETM, http: / /www.callforentry.org, is a web -based service that allows organizations and
administrators to easily and cost - effectively manage artist - application and jury processes related to
calls for entry and other events. The service is especially designed for use with public art projects,
artist fellowships, juried visual -arts competitions, and many other types of calls for entry. The City
purchased the service this past year and has been using it to manage applications for the
Streetscapes program, Downtown Sculpture Gallery as well as the Gallery program. The Gallery
application seeks two - dimensional artwork for display in both the City Hall and Senior Center /Cheryl
Sallee Gallery. Commissioners were provided handouts with information on how to access the
system and review and comment upon the 70 submitted applications. The Visual Art Committee will
meet on Wednesday, October 29, 4 pm in the City Hall Annex, Conference Room 1 to review the
applications and make selections.
VI. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events
• Staff Maija McKnight reminded the Commissioners that the 2015 Vice Chair nomination
would take place at the next meeting in November
• McKnight noted that the new watercolor exhibition was up at the City Hall Gallery with a
reception on Thursday, October 9, 5:OOpm.
• Laura Westergard shared with the commission details concerning the new Streetscape show
on One Main, also noted the Halloween festival on October 25th and shared the need for
volunteers to provide face painting
• DeNae McGee and Nancy Colson announced that the Auburn Symphony Orchestra Season
was starting and spoke of their upcoming events
• Monica Tolas passed out informational brochures on ICA
There being no future business, the meeting adjourned at 6:15 pm
