VII. Department Report
Jamie Kelly attended a homeless workshop discussing the following: Some cities have day shelters with
food, showers, employment assistance, mental health services. These shelters keep homeless away from
parks, children, libraries etc. Staff members are being trained to approach and get to know local
homeless folks. Keeping trees and brush trimmed helps avoid encampments, the more people that are
around — the less homeless there will be, they tend to not want to be seen. Working on ways to help
them out and /or help them to move along.
Upcoming summer camps include every school age group: Day Camp, Sports Camps, Lego Camps, Teen
Trip Thing, Adventure Camps, Dance Camps, Gymnastics Camp.
Clean Sweep / Earth Day projects included: Dykstra Park, trees at levee's, cemetery, birding towers at
Auburn Environmental Park.
Jamie Kelly is working on updating the Parks Open Space Plan which includes quality and quantity of
parks, trails, roofing, fencing replacement and upkeep, facility maintenance etc. This plan is required in
order to apply for certain grants. The West Hill and Lea Hill areas are in need of more parks.
The Les Gove Campus Master Planning process includes the new community center, we are looking into
punching H St through to Auburn Way S which would turn the existing area into a plaza between the
museum and Auburn Youth Resources. We may call the area Auburn Community Campus and the park
area would remain Les Gove. May bring in food /taco trucks and leave plenty of green space.
The Lea Hill restrooms are nearing completion.
Upcoming events include: Petpalooza - May 16, Kids Day - June 19, 4th of July festival — July 4.
