Tuesday, August 4, 2015 Meeting Minutes
Present: Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Patricia Judd, Colleen Maloney, DeNae McGee,

I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes:
Chair Greg called the meeting to order at 4:26 pm. Commissioner Norman moved to approve the July
2015 meeting minutes. Commissioner Judd seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved.
II. Informational Presentation
Auburn Library staff Steven Bailey presented on the library's special events and outreach efforts. August
programing was discussed which included specific outreach for students and children out of school during
the summer months. Since June 2015, over 130 kids have been engaged during 41 site visits by the
librarians. King County Library System has 48 libraries throughout the county and welcomes 9.9 million
visits annually. Adult series are provided included Opera Previews, Mind Matters programming and a
Make Series targeted towards young adults. Steven then asked the commission for any
recommendations on artists to teach those hands on activity classes for teens and youth age 10 -16
years of age, and shared the desire to start offering art classes. The library also has a goal in the near
future of connecting their resources with young families.
III. Public Art
Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight discussed the move at the July Arts Commission meeting to purchase
the Silverware Ostrich sculpture. The commission discussed the placement for the Ostrich and McKnight
noted that the Planning Department's goal is to illuminate all future sculptures that are placed for both day
and evening visual appeal. Artists Greg Bartol of the Ostrich spoke about the location on Division and 1 St
SE as a potential site. The commission recommended that location and McKnight said she will work on
getting permission and plans for an install in September or October of this year.
IV. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events
Staff McKnight noted that the Parks and Recreation staff will be moving to a temporary location at Game
Farm Park Annex during the duration of construction for the new Teen Center and Community Center.
McKnight also informed the commission about the installation of the Penguins sculpture, also created by
Greg Bartol, Anita Schuller and Debby Drllevich, at the front of the Game Farm Annex building for the
public as a visual landmark during the construction of the regular parks building. In the new location, the
staff were seeking an iconic marker for directions and distinguishing characteristics. The sculpture was
an opportunity provided generously by the local artists.
Maija McKnight provided updates on the redesigning process of the Downtown Sculpture Gallery and
Public Art brochure. She also updated the commission on the three additional sculpture locations that will
be in use this next sculpture gallery rotation, as well as the fact that Cafe: Call for Entry will no longer be
used in the selection process for the sculpture gallery. The public art programs, Pianos on Parade and
Benchmarks, were highlighted as well.
Commissioner DeNae McGee shared that the symphony will have its last performance at Mary Olson
Farm of the year.
Greg Bartol shared that GRCC will potentially be getting a sculpture degree at their new welding location.
Also his team is working on welding 50 trees for the school's 50th Anniversary and on August 15th Soos
Creek Botanical Garden will have a show highlighting the welded trees as well as the gate they
commissioned from Greg.
Colleen Maloney passed out brochures for her art opening of monoprints at the Shift Gallery in Pioneer
Square, Seattle.
Laura Westergard shared that they are looking for volunteers for the Auburn Artwalk on Friday,
September 11, and that the Auburn Health Fair will be taking place downtown on August 22nd
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:30 pm
