Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Patricia Judd, Heather Longhurst, Dan Norman, Amy Sie, Donna Smart, Greg Watson Staff Arts Coordinator: Allison Hyde, Arts Assistant Mary Ellen Bowers, Excused: Cary Davidson, Kelley Kuhlman, Not excused Trudi Moses Call to Order, Introductions and Approval of Minutes Chair Gollnick called the meeting to order at 4:34 pm. After a brief welcome, Chair Gollnick asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the April 4, 2017 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Jensen moved to approve the April 2017 meeting minutes, the motion was seconded by Commissioner Watson Chair Gollnick called the vote, and the motion passed unanimously Downtown Sculpture Gallery Arts Coordinator Hyde provided a summary of the Downtown Sculpture Gallery program now entering its sixth year. The Arts Division distributed a Call to Artists, and the Commission reviewed applications from 27 artists encompassing 51 sculptures The details of the call were re -stated, an overview of the selection process was introduced, and a voting roster distributed. The commission reviewed each of the submitted artworks and the associated material The different size and locations of pedestals were considered during voting, as many of the sculptures are only able to physically fit in one location The Commission determined the ten artists/sculptures that would be extended a loan agreement The Commission also identified alternates that will work on the different pedestal types in the event that any of the selected sculptures are found unsuitable or unavailable for the loan program. No more than one artwork per artist was selected, and a variety of sizes and media were taken into consideration. Commissioners asked a variety of questions related to the Sculpture Gallery program, including the necessity of height restrictions, past purchased pieces, duplicating artist's work in the same location, the opportunity to pour a larger flush -mounted pad, and the option of installing a piece near the Game Farm Annex site that held the Penguin in 2016. Staff will work to contact and invite the identified artists. De -installation of last year's sculptures and installation of the new selected sculptures will be scheduled for Early September. Staff indicated that the Arts Division will likely streamline the Call to Artists for next year's Downtown Sculpture Gallery using CaFE or other automated system III. Discussion of 2018 Project Support Grant This topic was tabled and will be addressed at the June Arts Commission meeting. IV. Updates and Upcoming Events a. Hyde shared updates on current and upcoming news including: • The call to artists for Auburn's Iconic Public Artwork that will be commissioned for the former Big Daddy site at Les Gove Park opened on April 6 through 4Culture and will close in late May. • Artist Trust hosted a well -attended grant writing workshop in Auburn on April 13. Hyde received much positive feedback from those in attendance at the event. • The "Poets on the Ave," led by the Northwest Renaissance Poets and Auburn's Poet Laureate Marjorie Rommel was held at the Auburn Avenue Theater on April 28. Hyde commented on the high quality of the presenters at the event • Exhibits in all three City Art Galleries have been rotated. Commissioners are invited to an artist reception for Sarah Jane at the Cheryl Sallee Gallery on May 31, 2017. • Hyde reviewed upcoming arts classes, as well as plans to work with the Auburn Art Walk Committee to provide additional programming during the September Auburn Art Walk • Hyde distributed a list of possible grants for the Arts & Culture Center. Commissioners were encouraged to let us know if they had any connections that might be helpful. b. Commissioner Heather Longhurst of Pacific Ballroom Dance announced: • a collaboration between Pacific Ballroom Dance and the Auburn Parks, Arts and Recreation Department to provide Community Dances The next will be Rumba, taking place this Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Auburn Community & Events Center • Commissioners were invited to attend the next production "Our Story" on June 2n° — 3f0, 2017.
