Downtown Sculpture Gallery
Arts Coordinator Hyde provided a summary of the Downtown Sculpture Gallery program now entering its
sixth year. The Arts Division distributed a Call to Artists, and the Commission reviewed applications from
27 artists encompassing 51 sculptures The details of the call were re -stated, an overview of the selection
process was introduced, and a voting roster distributed.
The commission reviewed each of the submitted artworks and the associated material The different size
and locations of pedestals were considered during voting, as many of the sculptures are only able to
physically fit in one location The Commission determined the ten artists/sculptures that would be
extended a loan agreement The Commission also identified alternates that will work on the different
pedestal types in the event that any of the selected sculptures are found unsuitable or unavailable for the
loan program. No more than one artwork per artist was selected, and a variety of sizes and media were
taken into consideration.
Commissioners asked a variety of questions related to the Sculpture Gallery program, including the
necessity of height restrictions, past purchased pieces, duplicating artist's work in the same location, the
opportunity to pour a larger flush -mounted pad, and the option of installing a piece near the Game Farm
Annex site that held the Penguin in 2016.
Staff will work to contact and invite the identified artists. De -installation of last year's sculptures and
installation of the new selected sculptures will be scheduled for Early September. Staff indicated that the
Arts Division will likely streamline the Call to Artists for next year's Downtown Sculpture Gallery using
CaFE or other automated system
