I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes and Introductions
a) Chair Smart called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm.
b) Chair Smart briefly welcomed Commissioners to the meeting, and asked for a motion to
approve the minutes from the February 6, 2018 Aits Commission meeting.
Commissioner Sie moved to approve the February 6, 2018 meeting minutes; the motion
was seconded by Commissioner Jensen. Chair Smart called the vote, and the motion
passed unanimously.
II. Auburn Poet Laureate Nominations
a) Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde went over the agenda for the meeting, reminding
Commissioners that 2 finalists for the open position of Auburn Poet Laureate would
attend the meeting as guests. Staff Myde gave a brief explanation of the process by
which Commissioners would select a poet to reeommend to City Council for appointment
to the position of Auburn Poet Laureate. Commissioners were familiar with the
candidates past work, credentials, and community engagement from the nominafion
packets the commission had considered during the February Arts Commission meeting.
b) Poet Laureate candidates Avis Adams and Susan Landgraf arrived at their consecutively
seheduled appoinfinents, giving Comrnissioners an opportunity to ask questions, get a
better idea of the poets' accomplishments, connection to Auburn, ideas for involvement
in the eommunity and public demeanor. After meeting both poets, Commissioners had
discussion about the merits of each, and again commented on the extremely high quality
of both candidates. Commissioner Colson moved thaf Poet Susan Landgraf be
recommended to the City Council in the position of Auburn Poet Laureate, the motion
was seconded by Commissioner Sie. The motion passed.
III. Updates/Upcoming Events
a. Commissioner Colson gave an update of recent and upcoming Auburn Symphony
Orchestra events.
b. Arts Coordinator Hyde announced that Peter Reiquam's proposal for the Iconic public
arfwork at Les Gove Park was accepted by the Auburn City Council.
c. Arts Coordinator Hyde recapped the City's current Calls to Artists for The Downtown
Sculpture Gallery, and The Mary Olson Farm Artist Residency program.
d. Commissioner Colson announced the upcoming event "Be Artful"to support art
education in our local elementary schools. The event presented by Interurban Center for
the Arts will take place March 9; 2018 at 6:30pm. Staff Bowers will forward a flier to
commissioners.
e. Staff Bowers announced wpcoming shows in the BRAVO series.
f. Commissioner Colson announced the selection of a new conductor for the Auburn
Symphony Orchestra, and asked commissioners to watch for an article in the Auburn
Reporter.
g. Commissioner Watson announced an upcoming cuitural opportunity at the Aubum
Buddhist Temple on April 22, 2018—a chicken teriyaki dinner (made fresh on-site.)
Tickets are available for$12 per person.
h. Staff Hyde invited commissioners to attend the Awards Reception for the Auburn School
District High School Art Exhibit currenfly on display at the Auburn Community & Events
Center. Hyde thanked Commissioners Watson and Sie who served on the jury for the
exhibit. The reception takes plaee on March 7, 2018 at 5:30pm.
IV. Adjourn
There being no further business, a motion was made by Commissioner Sie to adjourn, which
was seconded by Commissioner Gollnick. Chair Smart called the vote, and the motion passed.
The meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
