HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-03-2018 Minutes City of Auburn Arts Commission Tuesday, April 3, 2018 Meeting Minutes Present: Anne Baunach, Nancy Colson, Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Kelley Kuhiman,Amy Sie, Eydie Leighty, Sirichanh Sisavatdy, Greg Watson Staff: Arts& Events Manager Julie Krueger; Arts Assistant Mary Ellen Bowers Excused: Jan Jensen, Donna Smart,; Not excused: Heather Longhurst Guests: Ronie Schwend, Largo Wales, Fran Reese I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes and Introductions a) Chair Smart was unable to attend the mee4ing. Vice-ChairKuhlman called the meeting to order at 435 pm. b) Vice-Chair Kuhlman briefly welcomed Gommissioners to the meeting, and thanked representatives from Auburn Valley Crea4ive Arts (AVCA) for hosting the meeting in their gallery. Kuhlman then asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the March 6, 2018 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Colson moved to approve the March 6, 2018 meeting minutes; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Gollnick. Vice-Chair Kuhlman called the vote. The motion passed unanimously. c) Vice-Chair Kuhlman welcomed new Arts Commissioner, Eydie Leighty, to the meeting. Commissioners, staff and guests briefly intr6duced thems.elve.s. II. Presentation on May 2018 Art Walk a) Vice Chair Kuhiman introduced Ronie Schwend, a representative of AVCA and member of 4he Auburn Art Walk Committee. Schwend welcomed the Arts Commission to the gallery and gave an overview of the upcoming Art Walk. Nineteen businesses have agreed to host artists for the May Art Walk. A new feature of the walk wiil be the participation of local breweries in addition to the wineries which provide tasting samples to those who purchase tasting tickets. Green River College will have s.everal ceramics students turning pots at one of the venues, and 4 venues have been selected to provide music for the event. The Spring Art VNalk will take place on Friday, May 11 from 5:00- 8:OOpm. The date for the Autumn Art V1/alk will be September 14, 2018. III. Presentation on Auburn Valley Creatiye Arts a) Ronie ScFiwend and Commissioner Gollnick reiterated their welcome to the AVCA gallery and gave an update on the group's current activities. AVCA currently has 35 active artists, with a roster of 150 past and present members, and supporters. The AVCA Gallery is located at 238 E. Main in Aubum, hours are Thursday through Saturday 11;OOam-4:OOpm. AVCA is currently hosting a show of its members work, along with a special exhibit of works by students of the Muckleshoot Tribal School. AVCA worked with teacher Nancy Sunitch to prepare the exhibi4ion. They hosted an Open House which was well attended by friends and family of the sfutlents. AVCA would welcome connections to fhe Aubum School District for a similar exhibit. Commissioner Baunach suggested contacting the coordinator of the student art exhibit at the School District Boardroom. Commissioner Watson offered to contact art teachers at Auburn High School. IV. Updates/Upcoming Events a. Arts & Even4s Manager Krueger briefly updated Commissioners on the prbgress of the Call to Artists for 4he Mary Olson Farm Artist in Residence program. A jury of 10 arts professionals, arts commissioners anii city staff reviewed 36 strong applica4ions and narcowed the field to three artists who have been invited for interviews which will take place this week. b. Krueger reviewed information on the current Call to Artisfs for the 2018-2019 Outdoor Sculpture Gallery. The deadline is April 19th. Krueger reminded Commissioners that we will review artists for the Sculpture Gallery at the May Arts Commission meeting. c. Krueger reviewed information about the sculpture "Head Above Water," a part of the 2017-18 Outdoor Sculpture Gallery, which was damaged and removed from display. d. Krueger informed Commissioners about damage that was done to the exterior components of fhe heating and cooling system at the Arts & Gulture Center. e. Krueger updated Commissioners on the progress being made tow.ard the completion of a grant proposal to Bloomberg Philanthropies for help in funding a proposed Auburn Artist Alley project. The project would take place in the alley between the Aubum Avenue Theater and the Arts & Culture Center. f. Kruegerdistributed bookmarks listing the City's Summer schedule of Special Events. g. Krueger reviewed the lineup of upcoming BRAVO performances and the City's Spring Break Theater Camp, the camp production will be Alice in Wonderland. h. CommissionerColson notified Gommissioners of the upcoming event, Poetry on the Ave. i. Commissioner Colson invited Commissioners to the Aubum Symphony O�chesfra's presentation of"The Planets" by Holst. The concert on April 29'", will include a special visual accompaniment choreographed by Adrian Wyard using NASA images of each planet. j. Commissioner Gollnick noted that AVCA will have a large fundraiser in late July called "Art in the Gardens". She also noted two upcoming Paint & Sip events on April 13'h and April 27'^. k. Commissioner Sie invited Commissioners to the Asia Pacific Cultural Center for Thousand Faces Chinese Opera on May 13. L Commissioner Sisavatdy invited Commissioners to the Lao Community New Year celebrations at the LCSC, she will send information to Arts Coordinator Hyde to be shared by email. m. Commissioner Watson reminded Commissioners of the White River Buddhist Temple's upcoming event on April 22. V. There being no further business, a motion was made by Commissioner Colson to adjourn, which was seconded by Commissioner Baunach. Vice-Ghair Kuhiman called the vote, and the motion passed.
